Re: Using Newspaper As Drum Wrap ??

I covered a kit with newspaper about 8 years ago. I had a non-matching kit (Premier APK tom and kick and a Pearl Export floor tom) that I wanted to make all the same color. Since I was in college...

Re: Clear head on snare, yeah nah?

One of the best sounding snares I ever used was a 5x14 clear Acrolite with a clear CS black dot batter. So go for it. I think it's especially cool on an acrylic shell.

Re: 12" tom on mount, lost resonance

I had really good luck putting 12" toms on snare stands. Wish I could say the same for my 15". I'd really like to see a snare stand with "air-ride" rubber tips like the Pearl floor tom legs. I have...

Re: seamless vs seamed snare...

From what I understand (I think I read this on Drummerworld), if you tap a seamless shell, it has a clear tone, almost that of a bell. When you tap a seamed shell, it sounds like a piece of metal....

Re: BIG drum kits

Big drums can be fun. I've got a kit with a 16x18 floor tom and a 12x15 rack tom. Kick isn't quite as bit (18x22) but certainly gets the job done! You shouldn't have too much trouble finding the...

Re: Sonor Safari

Not all 20-somethings insist on that. I'm a 20-something who's also of the "been there done that" generation. But I've also been playing clubs since I was much too young to even be in those clubs.

Re: How to determine if its birch or maple

Yup. Starclassic Performer. Great drums. I remember an ad with Kenny Aronoff talking about how great these drums are.

The bass drum is what I looked at first. Also, I believe the maple...

Re: Which drums to buy?

Ayotte? I remember they had awesome ads in Modern Drummer back when I was a subscriber.

Re: My Sonor Safari kit - mini-review and demo video!

After watching that video, I feel like Bo could make any kit sound great. Wow. Let's hear the Safari played by a mortal.

Re: Best Birch Kits?

I'm pretty happy with my Premier Genista kit. Their large round lugs are not for everyone, but they're nice drums.

Doesn't seem like there are a whole lot of kits with birch shells, compared to...

Re: Sonor Safari

Judging by looks alone, this kit is so much better than all of Yamaha's "HipGig" kits, with the shallow toms and all the arms poking out of the obscenely deep bass drum. Looks like some sort of...

Re: Mounting a tom in a snare stand!

My thoughts exactly. I used to put 12" toms in a snare stand ("just the tips") in the lip of the hoop (not sitting inside) and it sounded great, but with a bigger, heavier, 15" tom, it sounds dead....

Re: Mounting a tom in a snare stand!

Great idea, except my tom is a 15-incher. Maybe the floor tom RIMS mount on my tom is more appropriate.

Re: Mounting a tom in a snare stand!

I like your bumblebee kit.

I wonder if there are any physicists or engineers or something like that on here that can explain how the drum loses so much sustain this way, and if something softer...

Re: Ultimate Drumset!!

Probably some Ludwig Classic Maples in black sparkle with a couple of big Paiste 2002 cymbals.

Exactly what I was trying to say. Thanks for making this point.

Re: Mounting a tom in a snare stand!

I think I've figured it out:

A smaller, lighter tom will sound better in a snare stand than a larger, heavier tom.

My two 12" toms (a 10x12 Premier APK and an 8x12 Tama Swingstar) sound...

Re: Best deal you've ever scored on drum gear

Searched craigslist for a DW9000 single BD pedal. Found one that came with a 5-piece Pearl Export in excellent condition, snare stand, the "slave" side of a DW7000 double pedal, and a DW9000 hi-hat...

Re: The Truth Behind Tama's Move to China

This idea has been beaten to death. And you're absolutely right, that it's basically impossible to totally avoid products made under less-than-ideal (or worse) working conditions. But I think I see...

Re: Something that bugs me...

From my experience, I think it may make sense to leave some space between the bearing edge and the edge of the wrap. I had a couple of Tama Imperialstar toms (the early 1980s drums, not the new...

Re: My New Ludwig Centennials (good and bad news!)

Come on, Ludwig. If you're going to ship out drums with damaged bearing edges, at least do it on drums with coated heads!

That's too bad about your shell. Hopefully they'll take care of it for...

Re: The Truth Behind Tama's Move to China

I believe this is accurate. I recently completed a master's in urban/environmental policy and this topic came up a few times in class discussions.

Sorry to get off topic. I enjoy when economic...

Re: The Truth Behind Tama's Move to China

If you're really concerned about where your drums are made, buy used. Your dollars won't head overseas (assuming you're buying off someone in your own country) and you're not directly influencing...

Re: Wraps or finished shell. What floats your boat & why.

All I've owned are wrap kits, that is, until I recently acquired a set of ochre stain finished Premier Genistas. Haven't played it yet (or gigged with it for that matter) so I can't say much about...

Re: drum kit with a black finish?

I've considered wrapping one of my kits in black. It's jamminsam's cheapest color and a good all-around fit for any venue, but then I see an ugly kit wrapped in black and I change my mind.

In my...
