Exercises to hit the 'middle' of a beat?

Listening to some playback of a gig the other night I notice that I'm tending towards front-of-the-beat playing. I would like to get closer to the 'middle' of the beat. But ideally I would be able to...

Re: The power of smiling

I feel I'm at a disadvantage. I have the male version of "resting bitch face", and have never been much for smiling. And when I'm on stage I'm concentrating so much that I just get this total jerk...

Re: Can't seem to play fast

Hey Tank, I checked out your video and man I can hear clear as a day how tightly you're gripping the sticks. You're just beating that pad to death.

I'm not a teacher and not an expert by far, and...

Re: The level system?

Thanks for the feedback, guys. Jeff, I just ordered your book and Bill I'm checking out your extreme hands makeover.

The levels system makes sense to me ... I think the arguments against it were...

The level system?

I'm wondering what people think about the level system. I've studied with a few different teachers and heard competing arguments, not sure which I believe.

I've heard teachers say that the only...

Re: Is live music dead?

That mentality - "X is a public issue!" - is precisely what I'm talking about.

Anything can be made a "public issue". That's how Prohibition came into being. Now every restaurant has a calorie...

Re: Is live music dead?

It's interesting that you see that second thing as a problem, but not the first thing you said.

Re: Is Don Henley relevant here?

I guess I have to disagree, not because I dislike Henley, but because I think sometimes praise can go a bit too far :-P

Is a bassist who plays competently and stays in the pocket "one of the best...

Re: Rick Allen (Def Leppard)

It's simple: because the 80s. That was the sound everyone wanted.

I wasn't even into drumming in the 80s (well I was but didn't realize it) and I recall lots of people saying the era of the human...

Re: Samba

It's funny but I actually took the opposite from this - I'm going to try playing my samba as swung triplets!

Re: Ever shown up to play with a new musician and realized it was a bad fit immediately?

I responded to an ad for a drummer for a Top-40 dance band. Showed up to the rehearsal and only me and the singer (who placed the ad) were there. Thirty minutes later the keyboardist shows...

Re: Crossing hands on fills

Yeah it's kind of a manufactured situation, but I like working on it for mobility.

I know it's an impossible standard to set, but I think about guys like Joe Morello and how he could play any...

Re: Crossing hands on fills

Hmm. I frequently get an R over L if there is a short 1 or 3 downbeat note following a long 2-let or 4-let ... that is, left hand hits the 'let' on the floor tom, then right hand has to hit the next...

Crossing hands on fills

Sorry, I'm feeling a bit out of it today, so I'll just ask what I want to ask: anybody have any advice for figuring out your personal best solution for hand-crossing while filling?

For example,...

Re: Thomas Pridgen - Applying Rudiments To The Drumset (Drumeo video)

I love this video, but a better title would be "Genius Drummer Talking Nonsense While Playing Crazy Beats"!

Re: Past a point, are teachers necesssary?

The "nobody I know voted for Nixon" argument?

You are actually asserting that because you personally never encountered a music teacher who was demeaning or cruel, they must not exist?

I find...

Re: Help! Left hand doubles in jazz comping

Thanks, I'll give that a shot. Reminds me of a technique someone mentioned for better doubles - accenting the second stroke rather than the first.

Re: Past a point, are teachers necesssary?

Maybe. Is that something you just arrange by talking to a teacher, or should I specifically seek out someone who takes more of a coach role?

I'm going to try having a stronger heart-to-heart with...

Re: Past a point, are teachers necesssary?

While this is wandering off-topic, I'm curious what you find so objectionable about the movie?

Do you really believe there are no teachers who act that way towards their students (hint: there...

Help! Left hand doubles in jazz comping

Left-hand doubles are a pretty common tool in jazz comping. Usually they're the trip-let part of the "down-trip-let" count, either ghosted to give the beat some body or loud (on solos).

I have...

Past a point, are teachers necesssary?

Two caveats up front, to avoid any misunderstanding:

1. I am not talking about formal education, such as music college, where you have full immersion.
2. I am NOT saying "oh I'm so good I'm...

Faking "Late in the Evening"?

I have tried off-and-on again to learn the right way to play it, but I still can't make it through the whole song playing the full Mozambique.

Anybody have a good fake for "Late in the Evening"?...
