Re: Jason Roeder

It reduces the high end shimmer quite a bit, and makes the sound more "gong" like (which I don't mind). It really depends on a particular cymbal, some lose too much character and become lifeless once...

Re: Jason Roeder

I bring any cracked cymbals I have to a local shop who sends them out to a machinist to have them lathed down. It's an excellent way to extend the life of cymbals, and to give them new character at...

Re: Jason Roeder

I need to check in here more.

I did fill in for one show with A Storm Of Light last year in Seattle when they were in between drummers.

Their drummer's name is Andy Rice.

Re: Jason Roeder

That is a GMS ten ply maple 6.5" x 14".

I used it on Times of Grace, Sovereign, A Sun That Never Sets and Eye of Every Storm. I brought it to the session for Given to the Rising but it sat unused...

Re: Jason Roeder

The hats on Times were either 17" or 14" depending on the song.

The 17" hats were the cut down rides I mentioned above.

The 14" hats were an old Paiste 2002 20" crash cut to 14" (bottom) and a...

Re: Jason Roeder

Thanks for the kind words.

The snare I am currently using is custom built by me. 7x14 solid segmented construction, made of bloodwood (also known as satine). I used this on Given To the Rising and...

Re: Jason Roeder

What else would one need? I've been playing a four piece since I was 12 and I still don't feel like I've mastered it.

Re: Your thoughts on metal drummers?

Finally got to watch that guy play a few months ago. Jaw dropping. Great player and a really cool guy. Very modest and down to earth.

Re: Your thoughts on metal drummers?

If this does make it to print, how inclusive did you plan on making it?

Just DM drummers, or other "types" of metal drummers?

I hate the word genre altogether but what about other extreme ends...

Re: Your thoughts on metal drummers?

The manufacturers will come around. It takes time, they will follow the money.

15-20 years ago there were way less metal drummers with endorsements of any kind. I have always looked at the drum...

Re: Your thoughts on metal drummers?

What about metal drummers playing country music?

Re: Your thoughts on metal drummers?

To say metal is an adolescent form of music is true - metal itself as a form of music is in it's adolescence if you think about it, where as jazz, blues etc are
much more mature and evolved....

Re: Your thoughts on metal drummers?

Different things.

Example:

Meg White. A ton of feel, not much technique.

Re: Your thoughts on metal drummers?

More like it's just a different scene. Some musicians aren't cut out for ads, endorsements, clinics and interviews, etc. Some are.

Is the image of extreme metal (or any other type of "extreme"...

Re: Your thoughts on metal drummers?

Not totally pertinent here but I heard a good quote yesterday:

"You can always spot the Americans in Paris, they are the 30 year olds dressed like 6 year olds..."

How much respect one may...

Re: Your thoughts on metal drummers?

So are you talking about general perceptions?

I get the reverse all the time. I get under-rated as an "extreme" musician because I really don't look the part, or subscribe to any "extreme"...

Re: Your thoughts on metal drummers?

A problem I see with metal drummers, maybe more than other "genres" is their intent. They pigeonhole themselves into what should and should not be played. This can be said for pretty much any...

Re: Charlie Watts

Watts has this great "lift" thing he does with his right hand on certain beats, just on the back beat he'll throw in this 1/4 note pause that opens up the sound and makes the snare hit more up front...
