Re: Does your gear HAVE to be the same brand or do you mix/match?

Drums (except snare), cymbals, and heads are the same manufacturer whenever possible.

Hardware is a little less prone to OCD for me. I have several heavy duty Gibraltar Booms I bought in the 90s,...

Re: You and your practice regimen, come clean

I try to get to the rehearsal space at least once or twice a week without the band there. Some days I get 4-5 hours in, other days I'm done after 45 minutes.

I know in truth I should have a bit...

Re: Bitter Ginger Baker slating Zeppelin and Bonham - again

I have a hard time believing Art Blakey or Elvin Jones would waste their time sitting down to a duel with a "mediocre player"

Re: Playing covers vs. playing originals... or both?

play in a cover band a couple times a month to help finance your originals projects.

If your brother doesn't admire that then you can at least tell him how great you feel making money and...

Re: Bitter Ginger Baker slating Zeppelin and Bonham - again

I find it both a testament and a damnation that Johnny Rotten shows so much reverence for the guy. Can you imagine what those PIL sessions would have been like with the two of them in the studio...

Re: Drum fads: Past, present...and future?

Is it bad that I really want one behind my kit at all times?

Re: Drum fads: Past, present...and future?

nah man. they did get overused to hell in the mid to late 90s. But they could be quite nice when they were miked up for tight and dry vs shell resonance and compression for days.

Re: Bitter Ginger Baker slating Zeppelin and Bonham - again

I forget which musician in the doc I'm quoting but he says

"he influenced me.....as a drummer, but not as a person"

Re: Bitter Ginger Baker slating Zeppelin and Bonham - again

He's definitely a more versatile drummer than Bonham. But for all that's worth, he will never be as memorable of a drummer to such a wide audience, musicians and listeners alike. Which is saying...

Re: Drummer- the only musician that can't mess up?

Depends on what kind of mistake.

break a stick and miss playing one backbeat and it's not such a big deal. I feel like you can get away with screwing up a little on fills as long as you come back...

Re: Ludwig Copper Phonic

Good question. I've never removed the lugs from a Supra. I'd think you'd almost have to have something there. Even a paper gasket.

Re: Muscle Seizing/Fatigue at Gigs

I haven't noticed anything adverse with having a red bull either. Maybe he means those huge triple cans of Monster.

I think theres a balance between alertness, hydration, and looseness that needs...

Re: Muscle Seizing/Fatigue at Gigs

Pre-hydrating is the best advice, but be careful how much you are actually taking in.

If the music you're playing doesn't turn you into a sweatbeast on stage and you pound a 32 oz Gatorade, you...

Re: Stage Banter

The one that really bothers me is when singers sit there and explain what a song is literally about. It's fine if they tell an engaging or funny story about how the song came about or something...

Re: Band Pay Splits

We just split all money back into the band bank. On the occasion we feel like paying ourselves it goes even 25% for all. I book most of the shows, do all the promo art and most of the actual promo...

Re: tom mounts on cymbal stands

I've never enjoyed bass drum mounted toms. When I play two up configurations I like to offset the toms to the left instead of forcing a straight appearance with them over the kick. It's either stand...

Re: Stage Etiquette

that quote wasn't me, but I agree with you to a point.

I've never run across someone who thinks every band has to have eyes plastered on the stage at all moments of the others sets.

What I...

Re: Stage Etiquette

No, this guy was capable of being competent because I was talking to him and saw the shelving he did on the drum kit channels and how he worked out the sidechaining on the bass guitar. At some point...

Re: Stage Etiquette

I know this is covered a bit in other threads, but how do you guys handle completely obnoxious or rude live sound engineers? I've had pretty good luck for the most part, but I have had one or two...

Re: tom mounts on cymbal stands

All three of my toms are mounted on cymbal stands. I have no issues with wobble at all as long as I extend the legs out as far as they go and keep one foot generally underneath the tom. The only real...

Re: Stage Etiquette

Take some time to notice the people in the crowd who seem to be watching you. Interact with em. It's pretty easy to pick all two of them out.

The singer might be the MC of the party so to speak,...

Re: What is your drum setup pet peeve?

When people telescope boom stand shafts really high and have the arm set at a 90 degree angle. It just looks weird.

Huge expensive DW boom stands used solely for mounting a 10" splash.

Re: Stage Etiquette

Totally agree with you on it not being the time to show off a bunch of chops. I have had several live engineers who prefer the drummer do quarters and 16ths on the toms and kick, just to check the...
