Re: Natural Talent or a Learned Skill??

It's all in the brain, and how it's developed over our lifetimes. I am very good at figuring out computer and network problems. I always have been, and computers were not really around as such when...

Re: Help! Non-dominant hand needs it

Play crossed.

You said yourself that you're open to anything. Setup the traditional way and lead most things with your right.

Re: playing along with stuff

Easiest? mp3 player and some isolating in-ear phones.

Trying to play over a speaker system is tougher.

Re: Which college will be the best choice for drummer doing rock muisc in LA?

So, all talks about the "usefulness" of a music degree aside, I think that if music is really your passion, and you're not a moron, you'll most definitely learn things that will benefit your music...

Re: Keeping Time On The Hi-Hat With The Left Foot

Every time you hear a song, or the windshield wipers, or anything with consistent time, tap your foot to it in 8ths; if you're sitting do the bass drum part too. This also helps with your awareness...

Re: Bass Drum Playing Help?

The book "funky primer for the rock drummer" has a great page on bass drum patterns with lots of different ideas.

Get a metronome running, and go over that page at various speeds, starting slow...

Re: Leave Me Alone, rant 2

I dunno man, have you ever tried to get a good dinner roll going on the kit? Doesn't work so well, regardless of genre.

Re: Which college will be the best choice for drummer doing rock muisc in LA?

I know, right? 2 and 4. How hard is that? I've seen mobile phones that were smarter than rock drummers. And besides, rock drummers are like the kids who make our Nike shoes for 16 cents and hour....

Re: Leave Me Alone Please

You would not want to hear me test out new drums. It would sound like someone sound checking microphones on a kit. I would want to hear everything clearly, both in and out of musical context.

Re: Karma - how i love thee!!

Now is when you call him and ask if he wants to sub a few gigs.

I think you know what to do next. And since you're in the karma black, you should be able to pull off a punk move without incurring...

Re: Tablet as a music stand?

What I'd do is something like the "dropbox" app. Though this has nothing to do with music, it is a file storage and organization tool. It syncs between more than one device so you can manage lists...

Re: Recurring dream - drum related

I'm kind of an expert on dreams, and this one probably means that the next time you use the rest room, you'll have something splash back on your bum.

Re: Another Band Drama Thread

Aren't you guys doing sound checks? The management doesn't stop it right away if it's too loud for the venue? The sound guy doesn't turn those idiot guitards down?

Re: Elvin Jones Interview from 1968

Journalist write so much differently today than back then. The thoughts seem to be almost scattered and organized in a "lazy" way. These days, we want our information, and we want it fast. The...

Re: Not denting heads

I'm theorizing that anyway. You'd literally have to dig into the head, and that's not going produce the good rebound I'm talking about. As I said, I've actually never personally made a dent in any...

I think you're saying that you're just not worried about correct technique when you play out, and I can see that. To me, I have just played off the drum for so long that it's never something I think...
