Re: 15" snares

Can't say that I've ever actually played a 15" snare but I have long lusted after one. I just love the idea of a snare that still has a nice low tone even at a higher tension.

Not really the same...

Re: New Gretsch Renown Birch

I like Gretch stuff but for the life of me I can't figure out why they only offer their higher mid-level stuff with these ridiculous modern bass drum sizes. I have zero interest in a 18" deep bass...

Re: Who uses Moongel?

I have noticed that. I remember one thread where a few members got into a heated discussion on what constitutes a "wide open" bass drum. I think it came from everyone wanting to say that then don't...

Re: No love for 20" bassdrums?

I have been playing a 20x14 60's era Rogers kick. Sounds good enough although I have found the size a little difficult to tune for me. I was lucky enough to acquire a 22x14 Rogers kick, same ugly...

Re: Who uses Moongel?

I don't muffle most of my snares but a couple of them need just a little bit of dampening. When I use a Moongel, or more realistically a window cling, I just leave it on the snare and bag the whole...

Re: A new idea? Probably not.

Inspired by my drum teacher I recently ditched the floor tom and have been playing my church gig with just kick, snare and a 13" rack tom. Works wonderfully. For my rockabilly band I play gigs with...

Re: Harvard study of time keeping and groove

I think this is going to be strong contender for next year's Ig Noble awards (http://www.improb.com/ig/ig-top.html).

Re: Smaller Kits

This. I managed to do away with a boom stand recently. I was a flat base one but still had some heft to it. I replaced it with a bass drum mounted cymbal stand and a cowbell clamp so that I could...

Re: Kit Upgrade, Looking for Advice

Don't buy new. You'll find a lot more bang for your buck in the used market.

I'm assuming you live in the US. What city/state are you in? What type of kit are you playing now?

Re: Got my 50th anniversary supra today!

That is officially the greatest thing that I have read all day. I am tempted to use it as my new signature.

Sweet drum OP.

Re: Increasing drum hand speed/chops

I have been working with a new teacher lately, a concert percussionist with amazing chops and musicianship.

First lesson, I sit down in front of the pad and hold the stick the way I normally do....

Re: New kit with lots of power

Mon Deaux... that is quite the kit. I'll bet it sounds massive.

Beautiful work there, I especially like that little inlay in the middle.

Re: Joe Morello on Buddy Rich Part 3

I'm curious as to why he said that Roach wasn't "equipped for that". From what I've seen, Morello was a pretty blunt guy. Was that a dig at Roach or did he really lack the flashy Big Band era chops...

Re: Vintage Snare Drum Collectors?

Wonderful collection John. Do I see an Ayotte Drumsmith snare in there? I just scored one of those this past weekend. It was too good a deal to pass up.

Re: My 1st post: Help with Ludwig Snare.

Damn! Looks like I was wrong about the shell depth. I tip my hat to you Jules.

Great score OP. A used 402 (6.5" depth) can go for around 4 bills used. You scored a good one there.

Re: Solid shell snare?

I just want go back to the OP's idea and address the DW Supersolid. It is an expensive piece of junk. You could get the same tone, sharp attack with little to no body, with a muffled 13" steel snare...

Re: Joe Morello on Buddy Rich #1

I ended up getting stuck on Youtube after watching this and watched 2 Morello instruction videos. One thing that struck me as interesting was his R hand technique.

My drum instructor was also a...

Re: My 1st post: Help with Ludwig Snare.

You sure about that Jules? That looks like a 5" deep shell to me.

Still a great deal either way though.

Re: My 1st post: Help with Ludwig Snare.

That doesn't look like a SS model. It would have extra, matching holes on both sides like it was drilled for 2 throwoffs.

I suspect somewhere along the line someone swapped out the stock hoop for...

Re: Gretsch orphans or new kit?

Thanks for the replies. I figure I'd like to keep the budget around 6 bills for the drums. The re-wrap, if I go that route, will run me about another 150-200 bills.

I am a little apprehensive of...
