Thanks BGH & everyone else who responded. I heard back from Yamaha today & the drums were made in the 90's, from 91, 95, 98 & 99. They think the '10 made in 91 may have been a prototype as it is...

I've had a Starclassic Performer kit since 1997 & they are Birch/Basswood. I have found the sound I prefer is Evans G2's over G1's, they have a nice tone & projection set up like this. The Mapex kit...

Thanks, yes they are black inside & other than the serial # discrepancy they seem like the real deal. Yamaha responded to my email pretty quick so I sent them the serial #'s for all 5 drums....
