Re: One of those rooms......

Ludlow area, you say? I'm wondering if I may have played in that very room, several years ago... wherein, adding to the acoustic issues, I was the only person present not in fancy dress. :)

Re: I'm Coming to Canada

If you haven't already been and gone, this place recently opened (a drum-based offshoot of a well-established specialist guitar store):

Re: Playing others' kits

Yep, sometimes it does work out nicely, and I don't mind letting people use my kick, toms and hardware, although these days I'm rarely in the position of being the drummer who gets asked.

I just...

Re: What Drum Moments Give You the Chills

One more, if we're talking about moments... Jimmy Cobb's crash at about 1:30 in 'So What' on Kind of Blue.

Re: What Drum Moments Give You the Chills

Almost anything played by Steve Jansen, a good example being the very sombre, hypnotic part on David Sylvian's 'Before the Bullfight':

Re: Playing others' kits

Of course you just have to laugh it off and make the best of it. When a drum is so awful that it tries to escape from the stage, though, it does make things more challenging... :)

Playing others' kits

Hi all,

I know that we've all had our share of adventures playing other people's drums at gigs, but since relocating to Canada ten years ago, I've usually been pleasantly surprised at the...

Re: I'm Coming to Canada

Hi, I'm in Vancouver, just seconding opentune's opinion. Only the chain stores here, and no real bargains, in fact depending on where you're coming from you might be taken aback by some of the prices...

Re: Left handed cajon?

I believe that some of the Meinl cajons are designed that way (the snare wires are on one side), but I imagine that you still wouldn't hear a great difference between hitting one side and the other....

Re: Taking kick pedals on a plane

Some years ago I was flying back from Italy to the UK with cymbals, snare and kick pedal. On the way out I had checked everything, but had the pedal as carry-on for the way back. Long story short,...

Re: Just saw Birdman, would watch again for the drums by Antonio Sanchez!

Yes, I saw it last week. It was either the best or worst movie I've seen for a long time, or possibly both (on the one hand, an audacious, provocative and technically quite amazing piece of...

Re: Your personal record for most songs learned in the shortest time?

Subbing for a Tina Turner tribute show. About 25 songs to learn in a week, but what made it particularly nerve-wracking was that the whole thing was on click because there were some pre-recorded...

Re: Musicians who don't listen to music.

When I was a full-time musician, I went through long periods where I found that I couldn't switch off my work brain and just listen to a piece of music without analyzing and dissecting it in some way...

Re: Drumming Karma

Not such a direct connection, but a few years ago I played a wedding gig at the request of a friend - it was very short notice and the band was just a hasty assemblage of whoever was in town, not...

Re: Cover version permission for a CD - anyone in the UK done it?

To manufacture CDs in the UK, you need to apply for an AP2 licence from the MCPS - CD manufacturers will ask you to provide it (you still need to do do this even if it's all your own music, but then...

Any good deals in Canada?

Re: Memory Lane......

First snare (far left) added to first kit, 1983, age 10. Interesting snare placement. My style hasn't changed much, though.

Re: What drum/cymbal/piece of gear have you owned the longest?

Paiste Signature 13" Dark Crisp Hi-Hats. Had my current pair for about 15 years - would have been even longer, but the first pair I owned were stolen!

Re: Musical artists who's death saddened you.

In recent times, I was very saddened by the death of Mark Linkous, aka Sparklehorse, who took his own life in 2010. He was someone who projected a great deal of emotional fragility in his music, and...
