Re: Drum Size Question

I think its about balancing the tonal and sonic qualities of the drum. A 12x7 may really sing in the middle to higher tunings, but doesnt have enough "oomph" to get a clear low tuning. They end up...

Re: what to choose Tama Superstar maple vs Tama Starclassic BB

Wow, stuff in Canada is expensive. That same 7 piece Superstar is $899 here in the states.

Re: Thinking of replacing my sonor signatures

Mangini plays Pearl Masterworks, Portnoy is Tama Starclassic (all different woods, even acrylic), and Peart is DW Collectors.

If the budget is $3K you wont get much with either of those kits. The...

Re: Tama Swingstar Brackets Question

Tama typically uses 10mm posts for their toms. They have been using that size for decades. Your Stagemaster stand should have come with 10mm posts, and your Swingstars should have 10mm mounts.

Re: Thinking of replacing my sonor signatures

For some reason, my mind is going towards Yamaha on this one. I don't know why. I just immediately thought of Maple Customs or Absolute Hybrids. Anyway, most any brands top end kits will get you...

Re: Walberg and Auge is back

You can literally buy every single component of that kit on drumfactorydirect.com. No joke, I just looked. I haven't done the math, but it might be cheaper for someone to just buy all the parts,...

Re: Gretsch difference

$800 wont get you much in the Renown and New Classic line unless you go used or find closeouts. $800 gets you easily in to the Catalina line, which can have some nice kits for the money.

Re: Gretsch Broadkasters Vintage Build; Floor Tom Legs Rattle Against Rezo Hoop

For the price you paid, I would at the very least ask for thicker gaskets and longer mounting screws to push the mount out a bit further. If it were just a quirk of the old design, and you really...

Re: Warning - Hidden dangers of drum building.

Ugg... Don't talk about fiberglass dust. I demo'ed my kitchen 10 months back and when removing the ceiling all the loose fiberglass (60 year old batts) came down and crashed on the floor blowing...

Re: Tama SC maple vs Mapex saturn IV exotic

You can get Starclassic Maples made in Japan. The ones with the logo under the lacquer and the wood vent holes are made in Japan. They cost a bit more, but thats just the way it goes.

Re: Tama SC maple vs Mapex saturn IV exotic

I would say the Starclassic is a better kit. I like the maple/walnut combo of the Mapex, but ultimately the all Maple Tama would win out in my book. MIJ quality, nicer hardware (I really Like...

Re: Warning - Hidden dangers of drum building.

You don't have to tell me twice about these issues. Well, you probably have to tell me 10 times, but my wife only needs to be told once. We refinished some metal patio furniture and my wife broke...

Re: Where can I download Aerosmith drum sheet music/transcriptions

Honestly, these parts should be learned by ear. They are really simple. Sheet music would be a waste of money.

Nothing against Joey Kramer, but a Berklee School of Music grad should have a...

Re: Is it OK to talk about the movie "Whiplash" yet?

I just saw this film. The drumming is pretty much all garbage. Even where the kid needed to practice, he just bashes the drums like some Guitar Center d-bag who thinks he is hot shit. Seriously,...

Re: DW Collector Drums?

Not really. There's also GMS, Noble & Cooley, Pork Pie, C&C, Craviotto, Ddrum, Stone Custom Drum, and all the Keller based "custom" companies like SJC, Truth, etc. There's quite a number of...

Re: Looking for a new snare drum

I would recommend a Pearl Free Floater. Probably brass (6 1/2" depth). If you want something a bit more dry, there are aluminum shells as well. These snares have a great tuning range and are nice...

Re: DW Collector Drums?

If I were to get a DW kit it would be their Eco-X Bamboo kit with Banana finish and Nickle hardware. Why? Because its different.

I forgot about her branding. Does she still put "Meytal" stickers on her cymbals and heads? #facepalm

Re: Meytal Cohen? She plays, right?

Ehh... I don't really like watching her play. Something just doesn't seem right when I watch her videos. She is playing the parts, but the sound doesn't seem to be lining up for how she is...

Re: So why two 16s?

I used a 16x16 floor tom as a rack tom back in the early 90's. That thing was a beast. You want to talk about tom angles? I can tell you all about tom angles.

Re: Yes, professional grade drum kits are pushed!

Wasnt there some Yamaha artist talking about his kit being submerged in Hurricane Katrina flooding for a number of days. Supposedly he took it all apart, put the hardware in bags of rice, let the...

The pork Pie 13x7 Mahogany snare that MF had on sale for Black Friday would have been perfect for you.

Re: Drum Builders, I have a question.

Make a "golden ratio" drum. The diameter is 1.618 times larger than the depth. So for a 16" drum the depth should be 9.88 inches.
