Re: Bands and tempo arguments

Yea, click app on your phone. If android, an amazing one is simply called "Drummer's metronome". It has damn near every feature I can think of.

When there is a discussion on tempo or a...

Re: The Bo Eder Pearl Vision Signature kit ;)

That bass drum has to be one of the ugliest drums I've seen in a while. I just don't care at all for the color/finish and the black hardware is not flattering it either I don't think.

Re: Jean-Paul Gaster

I heard that fill in my head as soon as you mentioned it; so memorable. That's exactly the kind of thing that makes a guy love Gaster.

And your story goes back to our previous discussion about...

Re: Is "pocket" what you play or how you play it?

pock·et noun \ˈpä-kət\

: a usually small cloth bag that is sewn into a piece of clothing, a larger bag, etc., and that is open at the top or side so that you can put things into it

: the amount...

Re: Jean-Paul Gaster

I don't know if I ever related this story, but very early in my drumming days as a youngster, I went to go see a clutch show at a very small but popular venue out here called "Slims". Tiny place,...

Re: Traditional grip for rock?

You just have to work at it and use things like velocity and inertia to your advantage. To be honest, most of the time I think trad is best for lighter-touch kind of stuff, but I've seen a lot of...

Re: This forum, meeting each other

I've only met Jon (Bermuda) in person. Almost got to hang with Matt Eder for a bit when I was down at disney, but he got sick that day and had to stay home!

Larry is such a character that I am...

Re: This kit set up intrigues me

That's kind of how Danny with Tool rolls now. Centered, toms to either side.

Re: Gigs that Require 1099 - Questions

First, I'm a bit shocked that a venue paying 200 for a whole band is even going to bother with collecting 1099 stuff for so little.

Second, I've come across a few places now that take an ID from...

Re: More on tom angles ;)

I love how the tom holders are sticking up next to the rack. What kind of weirdo gets a rack and then doesn't use it for the damn toms?

Re: It finally happened...the snareless gig

Had the kick split happen one time and we tried just tape at first and it really wasn't very audible. What helped was grabbing a cardboard drink coaster from the bar and putting that where the...

Re: Peter Erskine moves to Tama...

I actually thought the exercise was really cool, too. It seemed simple enough, so I started messing with it. Harder than it looks to just mechanically "comp" when you're really just comping...

Re: Peter Erskine moves to Tama...

I really don't get why people care. It's like the whole "wheaties" thing. I guess for some people, when a celebrity says they eat that stuff, it makes them want to eat that same stuff.

Never...

Re: The natural meter challenge!

See, I can't do any one thing for 5 minutes, but I can already tell you that my time has always been fine on just a single groove. Almost always, if I lose or gain time on a song, it happens between...

Re: 12db Ear Protection?

Musicians plugs are different. It's not really a flat 12db. The government makes them put a flat number, but the truth is, they go after certain harmful frequencies and leave others alone. I...

Re: Playing for Teacher

Trust me when I tell you that it's especially awkward to try and play "hot for teacher" in front of your teacher.

Re: When have you truly 'mastered' a given BPM?

Did you try just push-pull type stuff, or did you also have a go at simply single stroke even notes? I can go a bit faster if I'm just pounding out each note of the 16ths, but it's not comfortable...

Re: Is it OK to talk about the movie "Whiplash" yet?

I read recently that some of the blood was real, and it came from trying to record that ridiculous excuse for an up-tempo ride technique on camera so much. They left it on the drums, you know, for...

Re: When have you truly 'mastered' a given BPM?

Yea, roughly 110 is my limit. I know this because it's come up several times when I use two hands for 16ths, because it's too fast, and the melodic players get on my case about how it would sound...

Re: How is this fill done?

I'd personally consider it slop. Maybe the guy in the video would too, but my advice to not sound like that is still valid.

Re: Meytal Cohen? She plays, right?

I think you all need to go to jelly school. I watched a vid and it looked like most of the hits lined up. Stuff was I'm sure fixed and enhanced sound wise, but pretending like tons of guys also...

Re: HELP, permanent beastmode

I think that's killing a lot of sound possibilities and makes the crashes sound less "full". Probably better to just watch your touch and not whack the damned things so hard.

Re: When have you truly 'mastered' a given BPM?

I think your friend is talking out of a place opposite his mouth. Trying to un-musically do 16ths at one speed for an hour sounds a lot more like masturbation than actual mastery of a concept. ...
