Re: Decided to try this new look!

I just tried it darker with blackish and it doesn't look any better - maybe worse.

I'd try and return them and put the chrome back on.
Bo's got to give it a shot though or it wouldn't seem...

Re: Decided to try this new look!

Another alternative to a file or a router would be a small drum sander chucked up to a drill.
I also think a dark stain would look better, and bring out, rather than detract from the sparkles.
I...

Re: Musician vs Artist

Ya - I'd amend my previous craftsman remark.
In regards to drumming, the craft is the practice - burning the neural brain pathways through repetition.
The art is the weaving together of those...

Re: Musician vs Artist

Well, I'm not going to edit wiki, but there's a lot I disagree with just in that little snippet.

To me, art is not an activity, but can be the result of an activity.
It can be solid, as in a...

Re: Musician vs Artist

Vague indeed.
When I hear the term, I always think of the old time waster - "What is art?"

Re: Musician vs Artist

I'm old fashioned. I prefer 'craftsman' to 'artist'.

IMO artistry without craftsmanship is pretentious.

Do a search for 'pretentious art' and judge for yourself.

Re: Bop Kit Shootout - Sonor SQ2, Canopus RFM, Ludwig Classic Maple

I haven't done enough with mic'ing in order to critique that area.
I focused on the drums, sorry about that.
I'll leave the mic discussion to those with more experience, like Andy.

Re: Bop Kit Shootout - Sonor SQ2, Canopus RFM, Ludwig Classic Maple

I had to listen to it several (many) times, in order to pick out the timing of which mics were used with which tunings,
so I was able to jump directly from one set to the next under the same mic'ing...

Re: Anyone know what this set is?

I think you guys are right. It looks like this one:
https://www.guitarcenter.com/Used/Sonor/Force-3001-Drum-Kit.gc

Nasty price difference there. I wonder how that happened.

Anyone know what this set is?

https://www.guitarcenter.com/Used/Yamaha/MAPLE-CUSTOM-ABSOLUTE-Drum-Kit-114463892.gc

It sure isn't Yamaha Absolute.

Re: Paiste ownership decimated for now :(

I'm surprised that with you being in So. Cal., you didn't go to a store to try them in person
Ya - everyone says Paiste are consistent, but on-line orders are usually the luck of the draw.

When...

Re: The needless debate over drum construction and the misguided search for undo drum resonance

.

The original post was a long drawn out diatribe, but I think the point Chris was trying to make was this:

If so, I would have to say that both are important.

Re: The needless debate over drum construction and the misguided search for undo drum resonance

IMO cymbals and drums have inherent objective qualities that are independent of the skill of any player.

Enough said on my end.

Re: What's your latest purchase?

Man - that's a nice looking bass.
And enough power to rattle your windows there for sure.
If you weren't halfway across the country I'd say let's kick out some jams - ha ha.

Re: The needless debate over drum construction and the misguided search for undo drum resonance

I agree with Les on this.

When you ask "... no matter if you play that ride or Brian Blade plays that..."
you are asking about such things as finesse and technique of individual players rather...

Re: Buying new drum kit

At the MF site you linked to, you can sort by price, by brand, and so on.
They currently list 112 shell packs between $500 and $1,000.
Here they are sorted high to low. You can also sort low to...

Re: The needless debate over drum construction and the misguided search for undo drum resonance

Yes - it matters if I'm going to be buying them.

No - it doesn't matter if I'm hitting a practice pad or kit, or goofing around with someone else's drums, or something like that.

Re: The needless debate over drum construction and the misguided search for undo drum resonance

Take one drum and one drumstick Hit it just once and listen.

Not a solo, not a funky groove, just one hit.

What do you think determines the sound you will hear from that one hit on that one...

Re: Can you tell a big difference?

That's good enough for me. Eliminate as many variables as possible.
Use the same mics, same distances, same heads tuned the same way on the drums, and so on.

Processing too - as long as it's...
