Re: Why Modern Pop Music Is So Awful To Some!!!

Thanks Jeremy for saying it for me.

I think overdone compression makes music sound ugly.

Re: Get better Andy!

Stoked that your recovery is going well, Andy! Shame that Guru is winding up but I guess the time has come for you to assume merely human workloads so your body has a chance to heal whatever it's...

Re: Get better Andy!

I haven't been here for some time and missed this. Sorry Andy, sorry to hear about this as you are an excellent human being! That must have been a frightening time for you and fam.

Are you...

Re: Why the same songs, when so many to choose from?

Variety in live music has reduced dramatically where I live in Sydney, with only a fraction of the big live venues that were there in the 70s and 80s. This is largely due to gaming machines, laws...

Re: Minimalist - Not interested in new gear?

Yep, I pick and stick pretty well forever. I also keep heads and sticks as long as possible, although I like the mellowness of great that's been worn in.

Re: What are your bass player priorities / red flags?

I most dislike playing with loud rushing dominant bassists. It's stressful lol

Things like enjoyable tone and volume and the ability to lock in and hold it together are things you'd hope for from...

Re: Do people buy DW kits just for the badge

Often young players look at what the top players are using and figure they can't go wrong with that.

Re: I love playing drums at bars.

I loved playing bars in the 70s and 80s when you could draw an enthusiastic crowd with original non-metal music.

Home recording is much more rewarding for me now - I can play the music that I...

Re: Pete Best - His Weaknesses as a Drummer?

This is what PB thinks:

"Some people expect me to be bitter and twisted, but I'm not. I feel very fortunate in my life. God knows what strains and stresses The Beatles must have been under. They...

Re: Sir Ringo Starr...

It's probably about 45 years late, which shows just how hard it is for a rock drummer to be knighted! Don't get your hopes up, kids.

Re: Do you necessarily like to play the drums to the music you like?

I love prog and fusion and most of it is well beyond me. My tastes are nerdier than my technique.

I've played tons of music in bands that I'd never willingly listen to for pleasure. Still, playing...

Re: Breaking news : Simon Phillips' home burned down !!

It's weird that there are winter wildfires in Cal. In Oz it's usually summer and spring.

Aside from money, it's a terrible thing to lose your home and instruments. We develop a relationship with...

Re: Being impressed vs being moved

Rhythmic drums were once discouraged because they were believed to be primitive and brought the animal out in people.

So there's excitement, trances and, as Teddy Osai from Osibisa would put it,...

Re: Creating interesting and unique drum parts to originals?

I think you need to come with open ears. First up - what is the vibe of the song? What is it for? Dancing? Chilling? Headbanging? Get the song's form and arrangement solid and happening before...

Re: How not to play

A unique and innovative performance, with the "odd couple" duo utilising violently shifting contrasts to convey a sense of tension - heavenly poodling of the keys and fragile vocals in counterpoint...

Re: Being impressed vs being moved

Excitement, humour, surprise and delight are the primary emotions of drums for me.

Senri Kawaguchi when she was 9 years old (and since) would have reduced many adult drummers to tears ...

Re: How not to play

I've seen this before. He reminds me of a less good version of Kwon Soon-Keun, aka "Korean Drummer Steals The Show" - just a crazy guy without much taste but tons of enthusiasm :)

Re: Being impressed vs being moved

LOL! Percussion can be comical - sudden staccato stings - boom tish! :)

But the main thing we drummers do emotionally is add buzz and energy.

Many moons ago I played a party where the...

Re: Band wants to use programmed drums on record

What the band needs is a keyboardist who can sequence the whole song. That would be much cheaper again. Otherwise you are just wasting valuable studio time with pointless musicians and their...

Re: Who is the best British rock drummer of 2017?

Poor old Bill Bruford. How quickly we forget :)

And let's not forget Aynsley Dunbar, who has to be up there with credits including Zappa, Bowie, Lou Reed, Herbie Mann, Michael Schenker, Mick...

Re: Ginger Baker Turns 75: The Strange Life of Rock's Wildest Drummer

Me too. Many drummers seem to hate the low tech boxy sound that was pretty common back then. I LOVE it and have always wanted to emulate it (amongst other cool sounds, depending on the music).
