Re: What's the most famous drum solo in history?

It was Chuck Ruff. That solo stuck with me for years, too!

Re: Is drumming your career, or do you have a day job and do it as a hobby?

I'm not a professional drummer, so I've nothing to add to the great advice already given, but I do think that anyone who pursues such a precarious career as music also has a great deal of courage and...

Re: Working musicians, a young man's game?

This^^^^

I wonder where the pressure on these drummers is coming from. Are they sensing what they think society at large feels about age, or are they experiencing actual isolated incidents in...

Re: Working musicians, a young man's game?

I wonder if this feeling they have is common, and has been around for a while, like the swing players of old feeling out of place playing bop or more modern jazz. Maybe, in some cases, it's...

Re: Is this weird?

Mary, you're playing for the "purest" reason of all. As many have said, being in a band is not all it's cracked up to be, and the pressure we sometimes put on ourselves to push forward and achieve...

Re: How Important Is It...?

This is such a good point, I'm going to retract an earlier comment. Maybe the KG pairing and the song-without considering who sang it-was a good pairing after all. I'm a jazz newbie, but I got to...

Re: Billy Ward here!

Thanks for your response, Billy! I will pay more attention to tuning, as well as take into consideration drum construction.

Re: Were You Destined to Be a Drummer?

What an interesting thread! I had a toy drum set at four. I got it at the holiday time, along with a cooking set and a talking doll. Looking back, I thought, what an odd juxtaposition. When I...

Re: How Important Is It...?

Nelson-I've found your topics to be very thought-provoking, and have followed them with interest. I also think that anyone who makes their bread at such precarious fields as music, or writing, is to...

Re: How Important Is It...?

[QUOTE=Mad About Drums;1010056]This is my version of restrained playing, a long time ago though, and I don't have monstrous technique either :)

Re: Billy Ward here!

It was a real pleasure to see you on this site, Billy!

I hope I'm not mistaken in this, but in one of your books, you described in some detail a lesson you once took with Elvin Jones. What I took...

Re: Help needed! What brand is this drum kit?

I agree. No expert on this, but based on the hardware used to mount the toms, it just reminds me of many other "entry level" kits that I've seen advertised on craigslist. Although many such kits are...

Re: First professional audition on Thursday

Jonathan, I wish you the very best of luck! I envy you this gig-this would be my dream gig, for sure-love that kind of music. Have you ever seen "The Commitments?" If you want a great laugh and...

Re: Custom Built Worth it?

I speak as a relative beginner who has previously gone through way too much thought on what my "upgrade" should be. I like this statement, but it leads me to another question: were the "stock...

Re: Drum cam clips i'm looking for some feedback

Yeeeeaaaah! As others have said, your groove is incredible, and your fills unbelievable! Very tight, nothing out of place. I also appreciate the video you'd posted on your channel that explained...

Re: Your favorite genre in music?

Ditto for me! I love a lot of different styles, but in the end, I always seem to come back to this.

Re: Can Bands Be a Democracy?

Thanks, everyone, for your replies so far!

I guess the term "democracy" was a poor, overly-polarized choice of word, because it seems that many groups, or at least the ones described here so...

Re: Can Bands Be a Democracy?

I like your point! This reminds me of my last band. Our lead singer was the one with vision, and because she had more time on her hands than the rest of us, she was moved to do a lot more promo,...

Re: Can Bands Be a Democracy?

It doesn't mean it can't happen though and I think the band members would stay a lot happier together if it was an equal effort and there was no "I do the writing so I'm more important and so I make...

Can Bands Be a Democracy?

Or are they more like "benevolent dictatorships"? Could they be a little of both, a sort of strange hybrid, on a continuum, or something else entirely? Regardless of years of experience, please feel...

Re: Great quote from Tommy Igoe

Great post, Jeremy. I, too, learned the rudiments of reading from school band-playing the tuba, but shoot, it got me close to the drums, anyway! Had I had any sense, I would've taken percussion,...

Re: Advice needed from gigging/signed musicians.

If the club stops hiring bands and replaced them with a DJ/Karaoke/trivia contests/etc., do you think think those guys will work for free?

Musicians have a constant fear of being replaced by...

Re: Advice needed from gigging/signed musicians.

What makes it worse, the pay to play is even on the larger levels. I was told by people who've played it that the top 3 acts of the Oz Fest are the only ones paid. Most of the other acts actually pay...
