Re: Problem with cross coordination, LH/RF

A trick I picked up early on is, in your head, to 'aim' to hit your hands and limbs together at the same time (if that's what you need to do). Kinda visualise it as you play, and then just practice...

Re: Counting "Take Five" drum beat

That is a very important point.
For years I took lessons, and reading is one of my stronger points, so I'd fly through the exercises and music shown to me and although my teacher would always...

Re: Counting "Take Five" drum beat

A teacher is a very very useful thing.

A good teacher can motivate you, a good teacher has access to the materials you need to progress, a good teacher can give you straight critique of your...

Re: Good day/bad day check-in

Good day.
Managed to transcribe and learn two main grooves in Soul Vaccination by T.OP.

I'm also making some light but noticeable progress with The Art of Bop Drumming.

I'm also at a point...

Re: I feel like I'll never get proper practice?

I'm in the same boat.
I wish, I really wish I could have practiced on an acoustic kit all these years.
But don't fret too much.

You can still learn core hand technique, you can still learn...

Good jazz/bop for drums

Heya,
I'm a jazz fan and I just bought The Art of Bop Drumming, and it's reignited my passion for jaaaaazzz baby.

I'm looking for artists and CDs that are good to drum along to.
I own a lot of...

Re: Self taught or teacher needed?

Definitely lessons. I've recieved lessons for all my time playing until literally the last few months, and I'm missing lessons already.

Re: 2 days till drum exam, what to do, what to do?

It sounds like you haven't prepared enough!
Do as much constructive, focused practice as you can now.

Take this as a lesson to prepare more next time, no excuses!

I've been in this situation...

Re: Rock Vs Groove

I rock out with my head when I listen to groovy music.
Do I have to quit drums now?

Re: Where can I hear great drumming?

Absolutely. He posted it on facebook the other day.
The man creates genuine musical music with his drums and it's a pleasure to listen to.

Re: Counting "Take Five" drum beat

It sounds silly, but have you tried just counting one two three four five?

After all, the piece is in 5/4, not alternating bars of 3/4 and 2/4. It's a fairly steady tempo, so it may be best just...

Re: Where can I hear great drumming?

Check out Streetlight Manifesto.
Ska drumming is pretty simple, but the drums for this band are actually really well done and really tight.

Anything by Dream Theater is great for drums too.

Re: Counting "Take Five" drum beat

I can't play it as well as him or exactly the same (both go without saying of course!), but if you play along to the recording long enough you do start to pick up his solo. It's very good fun to play...

Re: Frustrating plateaus and how you beat them

I do his advanced lifetime warmup, it's a great DVD! I've just ordered Playing With Sticks by Jeff Queen which should add to that side of things as well.

But really I'm more on about the mental...

Frustrating plateaus and how you beat them

I'm at a serious barrier with my playing at the moment. I am working on it to get through but for the last few weeks I've been very frustrated with myself. I'm focusing on learning Tornado, the snare...

Re: Counting "Take Five" drum beat

Aaah Take Five. I'm no master, but I've spent many a year bedroom drumming to this song to the surprise/disappointment of my teacher at a later point when he was really excited to 'introduce' me to...

Re: Practicing on E-Drums?

Ditto to what Jeff said. My lessons have all been acoustic, whereas the only kit I have at home is a very old Yamaha DTXpress III.

Re: DCI-esque stick tricks - any resources?

DCI is Drum Corps International. I don't know why it's called international as it seems to only exist in the USA. Basically, marching bands with very technical drum parts. They do solo snare...

Re: Is this Exercise Good or Bad?

Why not try it?
As long as you don't tense up you shouldn't get injured - I just recovered from a minor sprain by tensing my right hand too hard while playing (despite years of training to try and...

Re: Producing electronic music

That is really really really wrong, haha.
Check out guys like Noisia, or Pendulum's old stuff, or Rockwell. Some of these drum n bass guys have absolutely top-of-the-world sound design going on.

DCI-esque stick tricks - any resources?

So, I've been being absorbed by the DCI world lately. By which I mean, smacking my pad relentlessly while watching DCI videos.
The chops are impressive, but I'm comfortably working towards that sort...
