Re: Hardest rudiment to play

Good post. You are correct that ironing out single and double stroke rolls to sound even and "right" is the difficult challenge-- not to mention the other rudiment variations. Yet, for some folks,...

Crooked fingers from drumming so long?

After all these years of playing drums (although nearly less than ten years), I have noticed that my fingers on both hands (mainly the two middle fingers) have deviated outward. I have used the...

Re: using your body to keep time - legitimate?

Sure it's legitimate. But if you know what's good for you then you will develop that internal sense of time and pulse. Why move and expend energy when it isn't even necessary? Oh. That's right....

Re: Virgil Donati is the Buddy Rich of our time ("IMO"...I suppose)

Your take on speed is right on the money.. but saying that Virgil Donati lacks feel is a ridiculous statement. If you judge all of his work, then you should see that somewhere down the line that...

Re: Speeding up Rudiments

The remedy for your situation is to practice SLOW before speeding up- EVEN if you think you are fast now...

Re: Cutting Hi-hat rod... Advice?

You're right..but it still wouldn't hurt for the threadstarter to observe the configurations of other lefty drummers to gather ideas before hastily cutting the stem down to size. Other changes...

Re: Cutting Hi-hat rod... Advice?

I second this preference. Rather than cutting the hi-hat stem, maybe changing up your configuration will be the better thing to do. If you do cut the stem, you will probably end up regretting it...

Re: 4-way coordination by Dahlgren BOOK TWO

Read it up and down as well as side to side. Make up your own exercises.

Re: Is there an "internal clock"?

Foot tapping has been proposed to be a tool of limited value. This may be true while sitting behind the kit. If a highly internalized sense of time is present then all 4 limbs can be free.

But...

Re: Time keepers or creative drummers

I agree. The Keith Moon should post his rendition of these songs since the versions done by the original artists obviously are not good enough. hahahaha

Re: what means 'pocket' ?

A drum machine is perfect time but it does not create a pocket? Maybe you should re-evaluate your thoughts on that. What do you think this modern day dance music is based on?

Re: Is this cheating?

Exactly. You're still completing the task of executing a technique. It's not cheating.

Re: Mike Portnoy

Dream Theater might not be your cup of tea, but how can you possibly be so hasty in denying the fact that the musicians within the band sit in the upper echelon? Is it not evident that Mike Portnoy...

I interpret this to mean that learning the Rosanna groove was a PIECE OF CAKE for you.

Re: Don't use a metronome?

This is also what I think. There's a point where you get comfortable playing with the click so that you don't sound rigid and choppy. It's possible to keep those intervals perfect while also...

Re: Lenny White

It was a dream come true. I'm impressed with Lenny how he doesn't move much when he plays. An effortless performance.

Re: Showing off v. Professionalism

This is a pretty ignorant post. How would you know what Virgil Donati (or any other person for that matter) can or cannot play? Just because Virgil and others like him have the chops and are...

And that's what makes the fusion drummers who they are. They deviated from the jazz norm. Even though they aren't as popular as these monster jazz drummers or classic rock drummers that you jazzers...

Re: How big is your bald spot?

I agree with this post. A large spot covering the head of the drum doesn't necessarily mean that the drummer has bad technique. The drum should be played all over in order to get certain sounds. I...
