Re: Old school thrash/death metal sound

Yeah it did strike me, (with my very basic knowledge of DAWs, plugins and mixing), as pretty much being a compressor...but it seemed like a few things rolled into one and the price you're paying is...

Re: Old school thrash/death metal sound

Cheers for the replies, i'll look into that software. Are there any general tips and tricks though? For example, i was playing around with reverb the other day and putting reverb on the OHs but...

Old school thrash/death metal sound

Assuming you've done as much as possible with skin selection, tuning, mic poisitioning etc, what sort of EQ/reverb/compression etc goes into getting this sorta drum sound...

Bass drum and toms:...

Re: Endorsement?

Cool, cheers for the replies.

Yep, just like I shop at the cheaper supermarkets for food and buy my car insurance from the cheapest bidder. Blame Lehman Brothers.

Endorsement?

How do you go about getting endorsement? Can you seek endorsement or do you have to be approached?

Cheap stuff is better than full price stuff.

VST plugins

I'm new to recording/mixing and have just discovered what VST plugins are...
Can anyone tell me if there's plugins that have a whole range of drum EQ/reverb/compression presets? I have a very basic...

Re: Metal Drumming - what kit should I use?

Tight tom heads is useful for fast rolls but other than that, tune to taste.

Re: A question about snare

Get a 13 x 6.5 Tama Metalworks snare. Probably the cheapest drum of that size combination and they come with Power Centre heads on them which in my opinion are the best heads for them.

A while...

Re: Metal Drumming - what kit should I use?

I'm not a fan of reso left off in general, but I really wouldn't with the Mars Pro as it's a shallow-ish bass drum anyway.

All in all, ignore the wood. If you start hunting down kits made of a...

Re: Metal Drumming - what kit should I use?

Actually I take back what I said about buying a Tama Rockstar, buy a Mapex Mars Pro - they're virtually the same kit but the Mapex looks cooler and the Mars Pro doesn't have the same sought after...

Re: Metal Drumming - what kit should I use?

Buy a second hand Tama Rockstar / Mapex Mars Pro in good condition. They're built like tanks and the toms are deeper than modern kits.

Re: Smallest Kits in Metal

Sludge drummers typically only use 1 up, 1 down with at most 1 hi-hat, 1 ride and 2 crashes.

However Joe LaCaze from EYEHATEGOD only uses 1 ride and 1 crash.

Re: Stiff forearm

Cheers. Nah I don't work out. Maybe I should, get pumped like Mike Smith and pulverise my drums into submission. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i6nrglujp1U

Re: Meant to be doing a gig tomorrow but don't know the song!! Sorry, I really need a solution

If you can play it when you're listening to it, why not play with earphones in?
Whatever you do, don't let this distract you from your exams, they come first.

Re: 5 piece tom configuration

I tried 1 up 1 down a little while back because I got fedup of always taking a floor tom with me to gigs incase the house kit was a 4 piece, but everything I'd already written was written for a 5...

5 piece tom configuration

Anyone else find that you write beats and fills differently depending on whether you're using a 2 up 1 down kit or a 1 up 2 down kit?

I recently changed from using a 1 up 2 down kit to a 2 up 1...

Can anyone suggest some simple warm ups or stretches I can do before a gig to stop my right forearm ceasing up and getting painful?

Nowadays I take a practice pad with me and play some basic...

Re: 300 on a new snare

What sort of music do you play? It's nice having new gear and good for the peace of mind on warranty, but don't rule out Gumtree. I recenty bought a 2nd hand Mapex Mars Pro kit in mint condition for...

That's good to hear, anyone second that?

Though, a few years back I had a Tama Rockstar kit which was always left setup in the same room and the wrap bubbled in a few places...and that's whilst I...

Storage Temperature

I've got a question about storing drums...

I leave a set of PDP drums in my old bedroom at my parents place stacked up in Protection Racket furry/padded bags. My parents live in the countryside...

China cymal placement

I've always had my china cymbal to the right of my ride, (I'm right handed), but a combination of getting fed up with not having enough room in tiny venues to have it positioned there, and now doing...

They're just a tool. It never hurts to go back to the basics when it's needed...just look at Rocky 3 :-D

Re: 3/4 time signature inspiration!

Feel/vibe/groove is far more important than technicality for technicality's sake, but surely you're not saying that understanding the maths of music doesn't help when writing beats...especially when...
