Re: What Haven't You Played Yet but Really Want To?

Generally speaking, a wider selection of cymbals.

A small be bop kit as well as a more various percussion setup ala Trilok's. It's all coming, though.

Erhu. I just love the sound.

Re: Is Vic Firth's New Lacquer Bothering Your Hands?

Anything I bought this year has been the same. I Stock up on all 5 sizes of American Classics at the School. I use them randomly while teaching the kids and they get a pair of 5As when they start.

Re: Keeping time when no one else is...

As many was to deal with this as there are people.

For the kind of music I usually play I definetly approach things as a "we" thing which it is if you have chosen to play together.

I'll just...

Re: What's your latest purchase?

2 Gretsch snares:
-5x14 Chrome over brass
-5x14 Hammered brass

The Evans heads that my kit came with are finally worn out, so now I'm back to the trust old Ambassados with good conscience.

Re: Is Vic Firth's New Lacquer Bothering Your Hands?

Feels like I'm not connected to the instrument anymore.

Cold and sticky or slippery. Like holding a piece of plastic.

Zildjian, please start making the Colaiuta stick again. You can call it...

Re: Is Vic Firth's New Lacquer Bothering Your Hands?

Yeah. I've been using the Zildjian Colaiuta sticks ever since I began drumming. The ultimate stick for me.

Just picked up a pair of the new VF sticks and the laquer just feels awful.

It...

Re: Practice advice for professional musician switching to drums

That's the same age(33) I started playing about 4 years ago.

Since you know music what you need is a solid technical foundation.

You need something to start building technique.

Stick...

Re: Best Drum Pad For A Beginner...?

For general home use a 12" is nice as it can both rest in a regular snare basket and the extra mass keeps it more stable.

A small screw on type of deal is great for travel, but never really feels...

Re: Vinnie Colaiuta

I finally picked up a pair of the new stlcks.

It's alwyas been said that VF produced the sticks for Zildjian, but these sticks are clearly not made on the same machine. The diameter seems to just...

Re: Too Old To Seriously Take Up Drumming?

There is no such thing as too old.

I'm 37 started drumming 3-4 years ago. I may not be world class yet, but I blow most local guys out of the water already.

Offcourse it helps that I've been a...

Re: What's the worst kit you've had to play on?

It was at a jam. A house kit, but set up how the "drummer" in the regular house band liked it.

DW 900o pedals for some reason, but everything else was crap. drum throne was justa restaurant chair,...

Re: Lifting weights and drumming

Hard to gneralize about weights as there are many ways to incorporate them. If the goal is just to bulk up and doing stuff that isn't healthy and balanced maybe not so good, but anything else should...

Re: How much air is in between your hi-hats?

I Guess it varies a lot for me. I had a measurer handy, so right no it's 2,5 cm on one side and about 6 mm on the other.

Re: What do you think of this snare sound?

Sounds fine and I guess it covers a few applications for various snares.

Way too many variables in the snare world to have an opinion on that.

I Guess you could record it in a musikal...

Re: Doing exercises Musically Instead of Mechanically

I think it's good to do both(for conditioning and control), but mixing it up and finding combinations that you find musical is offcourse what we're generally going.

How to balance it, I feel is up...

Re: Let's Discuss Sticking Methods

Isn't this just simply right hand lead.

It's just a single stroke sticking. Over time I'd add pretty much any other sticking possibilities for grooves and sound options. Also to internalize...

Re: Teachers, do you force Crossed hands on beginners?

No. I generally give them an overview of why we cross at the same time as I explain history of grip and give a few examples of successful open handed players as well.

Even if we don't really play...

Re: Using a pillow as a practice pad...do YOU do it?

I don't use a pillow, but I fold a towel on my practice pad instead.

It works better and my pad is already on a stand in the optimal position.

Re: Drumometer?

Since only speed is measuredmit obviously doesn't really tell you anything real about your playing. Only tools like this you need is a metronome.

The drumometer has a few other applications,...
