Re: Which do you enjoy most: Playing by yourself, jamming with others, or playing live?

Re: Evoking Emotions through Drums

Thank you for all of your responses! And thank you, KamaK for the suggestion of Blake Fleming!

There are two things I want to clarify because some people appear to be misunderstanding my post.

Evoking Emotions through Drums

Not too long ago, there was a thread about whether or not drums can convey the same broad emotional palette that other instruments can, such as piano, flute, and guitar. The general consensus was...

Re: Lincoln Center Jazz Drummer job vacancy

Common tactic in today's job market. Establish inhuman standards and then see who actually has the cajones to apply. The stupid thing about such postings, from the perspective of the employers, is...

Re: Ever had a band practice or jam session with you facing the wall?

Yeah, I used to do at my old house in order to dampen the sound of the bass drum

Re: Do guitarists generally dislike rests on drums?

Thank you for all your great responses, everyone!

I guess I hadn't considered that the guitarists may simply feel uncomfortable having to keep time on their own without a drummer. I always shored...

Do guitarists generally dislike rests on drums?

So, I'm in two bands. One is a mix of funk and punk (akin to RHCP), while the other is more along the lines of Radiohead/post rock/psychadelic rock/Zero 7. I have noticed something about the lead...

Re: Can a very (!) cheap drumset sound ok..?

I love playing on crappy kits! If you can make crappy kits sound good, you can make anything sound good.

Re: I wish I didn't care when I was younger

I'm 31 and only recently realized technical mastery doesn't necessarily land one gigs. I used to practice technical stuff till I was blue in the face, but it was my non-technically-minded friends who...

Re: Passing On Experience

Practice dynamics. Practice playing at fff, and then at ppp. Practice playing crescendos from ppp to fff and decrescendos from fff to ppp. And practice playing all the different dynamics in between....

Re: Trouble finding musicians

I wonder what the potential for forming an online band is? The internet is able to bring people together from disparate parts of the earth. Assuming you have recording equipment, have you ever...

Re: 2018 DCI thoughts

Yeah, that is weird. The only video I've seen of mylar heads is a 1978 documentary about the Santa Clara Vanguard that's on Youtube. The sound of the snares and the drummers' technique sound and look...

Re: How did you start getting "loose" on difficult fills?

Start slow, be patient, and get enough sleep (sleep helps with muscle memory and just memory in general).

If you could educate the public about one thing concerning drumming/percussion, what would it be?

Could be something you wish more people knew about or even clearing up a common misconception.

Real-life examples of rudiments applied to drumset?

Apart from paradiddle-type rudiments, doubles, and singles, are there any real-life examples of rudiments applied to drumset that any of you can suggest?

I know there are books, DVDs, and Youtube...

Re: Are you glad drumming doesn't have crazy practice tools like golf?

This. One need only open a recent copy of Modern Drummer to see the rampant consumerism that plagues this trade. It's the same in any activity nowadays, even niche hobbies that have relatively small...

Re: Time signature???

Something that can help with figuring out the time sig is to clear your mind and just try to feel the song and bob your head to it like anybody else would. That'll give you the pulse, and from there...

Ohhh! Maybe you're right! I had read his comment like 10 mins after waking up, so my groggy brain may have misunderstood. Haha. If that's the case, sorry, J-Boogie dude! 😆

Re: What is your "inner clock"?

I think Dr. Watso has the most comprehensive explanation here.

For me, it took years of work practicing with a metronome, playing with others, learning songs, and listening to music. Now, it's...

Re: Does Drumming Therapy work?

It is great to read all of your stories!

I used to have incredibly bad social anxiety and IBS (they went hand-in-hand). But drumming (and video games lol) always helped me deal with those issues...

What are your thoughts on modern rudimental drumming (e.g. DCI)?

Old school rudimental snare is often taught to drumkit students to improve their chops, vocabulary, and rudimental awareness. It also has a place in the jazz tradition. But I don't see much talk...
