I doubt your great jazz drummer could improvise with all 4 limbs. Most likely was doing an ostinato with the feet and improvise on top.

I am at the stage where I try to do a whole measure pattern...

I also have. The ride that mount to the bd hoop with the dw attachment. Saves 1 stand. Have a crash that mounts to the most rearward leg of the floor tom saves another stand.

I found that the "2" in any subdivision is the hardest to get. That would be the "e" in a 16th subdivision and the "tri" in a "1 tri plet" subdivision.

Work on those slow and the other ones will...

Have clips for the mics that can be clipped (toms , snare). Inside kick mic already setup and a your own snake (that way , you use very short mic cables from mic to snake ) and the house pa guy has...

Not that many spares over here. Clutch, sticks (of course), brushes, felts. Have a double bass pedal , so if msin spring breaks , I take the other obe and if right pedal breaks , I play with left...

To try to deal with that , move your own kit around , set up cheap oedàls and everything , miss adjust every single item while at home and play songs/make the best of it while practicing at home....
