Re: NOTHING TO FEAR but fear itself...

I agree. The kit came with the black, and I think it suits it, but I'm going to try new heads for the next time: white coated Ambassador reso and a Powerstroke 3 to replace the EMAD it came with....

Re: NOTHING TO FEAR but fear itself...

I too love to keep my drums tuned as low as they will go. And here again the Purewood totally shines (literally as well as figuratively) because of the African Mahogany. My 3-ply Ludwigs can't go as...

Re: NOTHING TO FEAR but fear itself...

Good point. In my case, my gigging kits aren't sub-standard. One is a 3-ply 70s Ludwig, and the other a Remo Acousticon, which is a great sounding kit. But the Purewood is such a monster that it...

Re: NOTHING TO FEAR but fear itself...

Thanks for the interest! Next gig isn't until May 20, at Joxer Daly's in Culver City. There's a link to our website in my signature, that has all the info.

Re: NOTHING TO FEAR but fear itself...

I completely agree. It just took me about 8 years to figure that out.

Re: NOTHING TO FEAR but fear itself...

Well, everything worked out perfectly. Drums sounded awesome, like I knew they would, and I got nothing but comments from band and audience members on the look and sound. I did have one thing happen...

Re: NOTHING TO FEAR but fear itself...

A manly spattered thang.

Words of wisdom? Or fan mail from some flounder? I think you are correct, sir. That's the conclusion I have come to, that is letting me do this tonight. If I don't do it,...

NOTHING TO FEAR but fear itself...

Not referring to fear about performing, but fear for my drums! I'm bringing my Purewood Mahogany kit out for a gig tonight. Their first gig ever. I bought them way back in 2006 and so far they have...

Re: How do you cue your live tempos at the gig?

Amen brother. Lots of times musicians I play with complain if it's ANY slower or faster than it's "supposed" to be. I think every night is different, every time you play a song is different. If you...

Re: Restoring hardware on an old kit

For tension rods, I leave them to soak overnight in Simple Green. Get a big bottle, and pour enough of it in a foil baking pan to completely submerge them. Next day rinse them under the tap while...

Re: Post your youth pics here.

My first REAL drum set, a blue sparkle Rogers. Bought it with my own hard-earned bread from Eric Gedalje's House of Drums in Northridge, CA. Probably taken about 1972. Please no negative comments on...

143 views of this thread so far, and not one reply. Unfortunately, I rest my case.

Andy Ramsay of Stereolab

Anyone else dig his playing? He's gotta be one of the most unsung drummers of all time. I can't find a mention of him anywhere on the site. Maybe there's not many people here that even listen to...

Re: Hollywood Drum Show 10/18

Oh crap. I always go to these but I didn't realize it was happening this Saturday, TODAY. Here I am reading this at 4pm, it'll take me an hour to get there... I guess I'm not going.

Re: 30 songs in 6 days.

I always start with cheat sheets. Break each song down into its basic parts (verse, chorus, bridge, breakdown, intro, outro, whatever) and add any little details about fills, tempo changes, anything...

Re: Do you ever stand back from your drums...

I do it every morning. My white Ludwigs are set up right outside my bathroom, so after I shower and am flossing my teeth, I'll stand in front of the kit and admire it. Gives me something to do while...

Re: acrylic timbales?

I don't think there can really be such an animal. Most of the color or timbre of a timbale is due to the metal shell. I think an acrylic timbale would sound like a concert tom, not a timbale. Plus...

Re: The Renowns are getting that much closer!

Glad to see you are still around here, Kona. I don't see many posts from you. But then I don't get to post that much either these days.

The Purewoods pretty much stay at home for fear of...

Re: The Renowns are getting that much closer!

The stock Emad sounds great on my kick, but I have a 24" Purewood Mahogany, a little different animal.

Re: Rogers Big R, why the hate??

Yeah, a great player's kit for a great price. What's not to like about that?

I was a Rogers guy back in the day, had two Script/Swivomatic kits. I've alway personally preferred the look of the the...

Re: Remo Quaduro's - any information/advice?

There are a few people on the forum that like these drums. They just haven't chimed it yet.

I recently became a big fan of Remo drums when my bass player gave me an Acousticon 516 kit he had...

Re: Ludwig Restoration Advice Request

For tension rods, you can just use modern Gibraltar replacements. They're the same thread and look identical to the original. You can get replacement bass claws from Ludwig, but they don't look the...
