Re: Yamaha Phoenix (PHX) Drums

I'd love to see pictures of that operation. I've got images of 3 old Samurai sword maker type Japanese guys in a secretive facility deep in Yamaha Japan.

It all adds to the mystique of the drums...

Re: Yamaha PHX - am I missing something?

I recently did a tour of some of the best drum shops in the UK, with the intention of playing and listening to all the high end kits I possibly could. I ended up playing DW Collectors, both Maple...

Let's not forget the 11 ply Yamaha PHX, which sound pretty damn good to me...

It's interesting that no one has mentioned cymbals of any kind.

Re: Your Holy Grail

I suppose I should chip in with my own.

I was looking for a long time for a Nashville era Slingerland Radio King, and to be honest I didn't ever think I'd see one pop up for sale. Then low and...

Re: Your Holy Grail

Wow! That's a beautiful looking snare.

Other than the looks, which we can all see are great, what makes the SOTA snares special, or is it more of a personal thing?

Your Holy Grail

I'd love to hear what are people's Holy Grails in terms of kit.

What's that one piece, be it kit, snare, cymbal or whatever, that you've been trying to track down for years. Maybe some of you...

Re: Looking for new drums - vintage sound

Would Sakae Trilogy be above budget? If not they are certainly worth considering.

Re: Who Are The Most Melodic Drummers?

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Steve Gadd.

I'd also like to nominate Phil Collins....

Re: Yamaha PHX - am I missing something?

Am I right in thinking the PHX was always made at Yamaha Japan, as opposed to being made by Sakae, before the split? If so, are new PHX kits, if you order one now, still made in Japan rather than...

Most versatile kit

It seems there have been a bunch of most versatile snare drum threads, but I haven't found much referring to most versatile kit. So what do people think constitutes a truly versatile kit i.e. works...

Re: How many drum kits have you owned?

I started out in the late 80's, and my first kit was a Simmons SDS8 (horrendous thing but at least I could play it at home)

I then traded that in against a Pearl BLX in gun metal grey, which was a...

Re: Spent a few hours in Drum Shop (Washington, UK) today

Also, of interest...

When I was there yesterday a fairly famous UK TV celeb. was in checking out kits at the same time. I had a brief chat with him and he'd come in particularly to hear the Sakae...

Re: Spent a few hours in Drum Shop (Washington, UK) today

I'm not sure it's fair to give the exact figure, but the guys quoted me just over 3000 for a 5 piece shell pack (10", 12", 14", 16" and 22" x 18"). In other words it's right in the same range as...

Spent a few hours in Drum Shop (Washington, UK) today

I had a fascinating couple of hours in Drum Shop in Washington today, and feel the need to share some thoughts on what I discovered.

I should start by saying that I have a Gretsch USA Standard kit...

Re: What is resonance, & why does it matter.

Again, very enlightening Andy.

Concert toms seem to have very much gone out of fashion these days, when back in the 70's they were very prevalent. Personally I'm a huge fan of the Phil Collins...

Re: What is resonance, & why does it matter.

All absolutely fascinating stuff and it's great you've taken the time to school so many of us Andy.

I did some experiments last year, trying different heads on one tom to see the effects each had....

Re: Carlock in, Phillips out

I totally get the JR Robinson suggestion, as someone mentioned he does have a similar vibe to Jeff Porcaro.

How about Rick Marotta?

Just out of interest, who would people here have picked to be the replacement for Simon Phillips? Not to disrespect Keith in any way, as I'm sure he'll do a wonderful job, but it's interesting to...

Re: Loss of too many drum shops in the UK

I don't think anyone has mentioned Drumshack in London, who have a good range of stuff, at least on their website.

There's also Rattle & Drum in Derby who have a decent selection in store...
