Re: Sonor vintage vs Gretsch Brooklyn vs Yamaha Hybrid maple

Just how heavy is "heavy"? Other than Pearl's Reference Series being extremely heavy (due to the super thick shells and the die cast hoops), mostly all others seems about the same weight to me. ...

Re: Gretsch Flavor

These are my 1972 Gretsch USA's, in a gloss finish. I think you guys are really splitting hairs about finish care and such. They're drums. You play 'em. Try to take care of them the best you...

Re: Gretsch USA maple, how old? G4157 GWR

These badges were after the stop sign badges of Ď72-Ď79. So Iím guessing you have a 1980s USA-era drum. On eBay I think every USA snare sells in the $400+ range depending on condition. I paid $608...

Re: The magic of a simple kit

Yes it is. I think Yamaha called it ďred rippleĒ back in the later 60s. The grain on the shells even go horizontally as opposed to vertical which is what a lot of stencil Japanese kits were doing...

Re: The magic of a simple kit

I've been doing alot of playing on kits this size - sometimes I even eliminate the crash cymbal. I've been showing some love to these 1960's Yamaha's that I've refurbished a little. I installed...

Re: Current drum trends you wish would go away

Why so bitter man? I'm sure you're not the only one who's got the market cornered on things that make sense. If you're a badass player, make due on what you have to use, or go home. Somebody did a...

Re: Vintage Pearl Drums!

Funny thing is, I did. This guy had two Ludwig hoops for sale for $55 with only $25 for shipping. When I bought them, the next day he gave me a refund because he couldnít ship them for less than...

Re: Vintage Pearl Drums!

Yeah, $70 a hoop isnít bad. But the size of the box means it also costs an additional $73 for shipping. So $210+......not sure I wanna spend that.

Also finally tried playing the kit the other...

Re: Vintage Pearl Drums!

I was looking around and discovered that Drumfoundry.com will custom make hoops and cut an inlay to fit my existing inlays. I need to contact them on how long it would take, and then consider if...

Re: What makes....

I thought it was the predominant triplet feel in swing music that made it swing. The reason you call it rock n roll is because you have a straight 8th feel going (the rock) grinding against the...

A re-statement of the obvious

Just wanted to put this out there, but this forum seems to be the anomaly on the internet. Everyone here is nice to each other, or if disagreements come up, they are worked through. There's no...

Re: Struggles of Short Drummer and 5-Piece with Offset Toms

I say just set them up regular, two on the bass drum and get into the stretch. Like Said, I'm 5' 00", and I'm playing this: a 14x24 bass drum with 9x13 and 10x14 mounted on top. If I can do it, you...

Re: Vintage Pearl Drums!

OK I'll prove it when I open the bass drum again. Pearl clearly identified either "wood-fiberglass" or "maple shell" on their kits from those days. And this says "maple shell". When I inspected...

Re: Vintage Pearl Drums!

Nope, these are straight maple shells. No fiberglass. This coincides with my research that in one catalog in the 70s, they sold maple drums, but after that, it was all wood-fiberglass until the...

Re: Vintage Pearl Drums!

Iím debating on the hoops. I just want to be able to transfer the white marine pearl strips to the new wood hoops and will be a considerable investment. Let me sock away some pennies.

But the...

Re: Vintage Pearl Drums!

Yeah. The job of drumming hasnít changed for me - I can groove on anything. If I donít have to worry about mucking up the finish, thatís even better ;)

Re: Vintage Pearl Drums!

Yeah, once those red Yamahas are gone, I'll be down to this kit and the Gretsch ones. The others have new homes.

Vintage Pearl Drums!

I'm a vintage guy - and I think this is my problem with being associated with Pearl Drums. New stuff doesn't really speak to me that well. OTOH, some of my favorite kits have been the various 1970s...
