Re: Billy Drummond

I studied with Billy for a week at a camp I attended. He's a really great guy and a fantastic player - he has such a fresh sound and can really swing.

Re: ...for the jazz cats ...

Mulgrew's passing is really sad. I only got to meet him/jam with him briefly, but he was a really nice guy. I was visiting William Paterson, where I am going next year, to check out the school again...

Re: The death of retail music stores

Definitely Maxwells. I have heard complaints that some items are overpriced (which I personally disagree with), but their selection and quality is quite impressive. I purchased 2 of my cymbals there...

Re: The most 'influential' jazz albums

Miles Smiles - Herbie didn't want to comp normally and Tony had no desire to play 2 and 4 a lot on the hi hat. Miles was cool with that. Now, many others play this way.

Thanks so much John. I will get on that. Also, I don't know if you remember me, but I auditioned at MSM and Purchase this year. It was an honor meeting you and I look forward to collaborating with...

Re: ...for the jazz cats ...

I have a general jazz drumming question.

I never learned to feather the bass drum as I played. I play a ton of rhythms in my foot so (a la Elvin Jones) mainly because I never learned this method....

Re: Berklee, Musicians Institute, LA Music Academy

In the fall I will be starting my study at William Paterson University - the same place that Bill Stewart, Carl Allen, Ari Hoenig and Mark Guiliana studied. It's an amazing program but it's jazz...

Re: Teaching

That's also a key thing that I am worried with. To be honest, I had pretty poor technique until last summer - a match grip that didn't really match. Any techniques on teaching technique?

Re: Transcriptions

Thank you all for the interesting comments. I have noticed though, that many of the modern guys sound very similar - maybe that has to do w/ transcribing?? Elvin and Tony and Art Taylor you could...

Transcriptions

What are your thoughts about playing transcribed solos or drum parts? I have heard both sides - that it's great to play along and learn what the masters have done, but at the same time you don't want...

Bill Stewart's Ride

Does anyone know what ride cymbals Bill Stewart uses? In particular, he has one really trashy sounding ride on the far right. Also, his left side sounds amazing

Musical Solos

Hi Guys,

Lately, I have been struggling creating "musical" solos - solos that say something. I have been listening to a lot of the greats (just saw Louis Hayes last night) and play whenever I can...

Re: Gretsch Catalina Club Jazz Owners

It's honestly one of the best kits on the market for the price - I even think it is better than some higher end kits. I have only had trouble with the snare. I also wish that I had gotten a finish...
