Re: Does anyone make a "quiet" snare drum?

Put a tea towel / dish towel / towel over the drum.

It kills a lot of the rebound and tone, but it sounds like a snare and is about 50% quieter.

Re: And i tought i like jazz... (festival report)

Portico Quartet are great, but I much prefered their older stuff in comparison to their newer, more electronic influenced stuff.

The Glasgow Jazz Festival starts today, and Im going to see the...

Im thrilled to find another Scot on the forum, and even more excited to see a Scottish drum builder! The kits look stunning my friend, well done.

Re: Can a love of music (that is not your preferred genre) be learned?

I never liked jazz, I always assumed it was for snobs, and I could never make sense of it. It just sounded like noise to me.
On reccomendation from a friend, I picked up a used copy of Kind Of Blue,...

Re: Scheduling/payment management for drum students

+2 for Google Calendar, its free, easy to use and it indespensible if you're busy.

When I was teaching full time I would take 50% off a student for the month, rather than the full 100%. At the...

Re: If I wanted to get into Jazz Drumming what would be 3 great records to start with?

I think you should get into jazz before you get into jazz drumming.

Re: Very Close To Pulling the Trigger on a Yamaha Stage Custom - Somoene Convice Out of It

Ive been using a Yamaha Stage custom in those exact sizes in the studio for a while now. If I were approached to do a tour right now, I would happily take the set with me, 100%.

Re: What is the difference of 3/4 and 6/8?

There doesnt really seem to be a common consensus with this issue in my experience. Some guys think in three, other guys think in six, and the argument is usually moot, because they are essentially...

Re: What do you put in your bass drum?

In my 16", I cut a hand towel in two, rolled it up, and taped it to the 6 oclock inside both heads.
In my 20", I have a small, dense pillow that when layed inside, touches both heads (its a 14"...

Re: Mic reccamendations for home recording?

I use both these mics frequently, ocassionally side by side, and the difference between them is immediately apparent, and quite obvious. The self noise of the rode is substantially greater than the...

Re: Mic reccamendations for home recording?

Im sorry but im going to have to disagree with that one also. Having frequently used both these mics, the Rode just doesnt have the spearkle and transparency of the 414. Also, the 414 has much less...

Re: Where to buy drum parts in the UK

ST Drums in Germany have a good service here in the UK, the shipping is incredibly fast and reasonably priced. I have bought a lot of parts from them in the past; their service is great and the come...

Re: Creative groove ideas help please.

You could always, dare i say it, NOT play. Listening to it, drums wouldnt really add anything to it, and you can always reserve the right to go to the bar during that song, or slowdance with yourself...

Re: Gretsch catalina rock with 26 kick (!!!)

I had one and hated it. I had it setup for about a year, and three just stacked in the corner. Its was just too big for my tastes, which evolved shortly after I bought it. That said, it sounded good...

For the following rehersal I put up a sheet that said 'These guys are shit' on the...

Re: Next kit?

having played the glasgow scene back-to-front the last few years, I would suggest you get a small kit. When you are packing a kit into a car, you usually will have a few guitars, maybe another band...

Re: Car for a young drummer (UK)

I have a Vauxhall Astra 04 1.6 SXi, its a great car. I Teach a lot, and travel to teach, and not just with drums, so i know that with the back seats down, it can take anything. Insurance is a kicker...

Re: Do you use dampening?

This. As a drummer in the studio, it was disgusting when an engineer approached me with dampening. Now as an engineer, the best thing at my disposal is tape, moongel, throws etc

Re: Companies that can do nothing wrong

Thats EXACTLY how I use them. The 414's are amazing overheads, they pick up all the sparkle from cymbals. The U87 on omni has such a natural room sound and enhances drum recordings so beautifully.
