Re: My new Yamaha Hybrid Maple.

For real. Especially one with a knowledgeable staff. Can you imagine growing up within walking distance of Steve Maxwell’s, or one of the other great ones back in the day when they were still around?...

Re: Can a very (!) cheap drumset sound ok..?

1. Cardboard IS wood.
2. This is all well and good, but I basically never play miked. And often, I am playing in very intimate rooms with very sparse and quiet music. It’s like the equivalent of...

Re: I wish I didn't care when I was younger

It’s so frustrating when you can’t hear your bass player(s). I would have moved the drum set to the other side and thrown a fit if the conductor said anything negative about it. Because I’m an over...

Re: How do you practice?

Mix it up every day. Otherwise, your hands will have more trouble “switching gears”, so to speak. I try not to spend more than 5 minutes on any one exercise at a time, I usually play buzz rolls right...

Re: 8 lug snare drums. Thoughts?

Re: Oriollo

Slightly off-topic, but I just bought a 15x5 Oriollo copper Bakar off a seller in the UK on eBay. I can’t wait to get some calf heads on it. The extra inch of diameter is going to be perfect for...

Re: When did modern drum head become mainstream?

Good-quality calf is king on big floor toms and bass drums, and I like it on snare heads too if I’m playing brushes or low-volume gigs. But yeah, for loud gigs and any drum smaller than about 16...

Re: Get better Andy!

Andy is my favorite forum member, generous with his knowledge and time...and really full of drum knowledge.

But this is how it goes. You get old enough to really be knowledgeable and develop...

Re: Anyone play huge drums?

I have a hard time believing you avoided this thread for this long. I haven’t been following it, just randomly opened it, and see your recent post. LOL

Re: Opinion poll

The green is nice up close. The bronze would probably look better from a distance.

Re: unusual notation

I had to play the first etude in his snare method in pretty much every lesson my first year of college. Very very softly, very fast tempo, with left hand lead, right hand lead, and strict...

Who cares how it sleeps? I want to know how well it will work inside my kick drum.

Re: Have you ever have someone in the audience tells you your playing a song wrong?

Angels walk among us. Some of them groove so hard on drumset. Know how the devil plays the fiddle? God is a drummer.

Re: unusual notation

I THINK they refer to whether or not you can go back before those particular repeat symbols when choosing which repeats to take.

Re: Double bass frustration

I would slow it way, way down, like 16ths at 10 bpm. Yes, 10 bpm. Do that for about 2 weeks.

Re: Need some help choosing a snare.

This. A well-maintained Supra from the 80s or even 70s can be found pretty easily and is worth every penny of $250 or $300.

Re: Need some help choosing a snare.

Feel free to play an Oriollo before you call them “overhyped snares of the moment”. I own one, and it’s nearly always the drum I end up taking to gigs, even though I’ve got some really nice high-end...

Re: Noble and Cooley 3pc Walnut

I agree. Not to be unkind to drum makers, but I really feel like wraps came into use out of the need to cover bad wood.

Re: Does anyone actually do gigs with large bass drums any more?

I hear you, I just can’t stomach the idea of hauling around a 2nd kick drum.
