Re: So Extremely Proud ...

Tony, your nurturing of people and their talent deserves the best compliment I know how to give, and I mean it sincerely:

The world needs more you.

Re: Has anyone started playing out after turning 50 years old?

After 30 years of not drumming, I started practicing a bit, then found out a local concert band was drummerless and just walked in one night. (I learned to read music doing big band stuff in high...

Re: Nick Mason - Thoughts

I'm another fan of Final Cut.

I can see how it soured the others on following Roger Waters' lead from then on, but a really brilliant album. I rank it as good as any Pink Floyd album (I know...

Re: Do your hands ache when you stop playing for a while

My hands typically ache a bit and are quite stiff in the mornings, but loosen up over the course of the day. Just the beginnings of arthritis I believe.

Re: Minimalist - Not interested in new gear?

I have a great job, but I also have a big family and my wife does not work, so money for my hobby is pretty much a non-starter. When I resumed playing a couple of years ago after decades away, I...

Re: Ergonomics of Playing a Kit

I thought pretty much everything in this post was bang on and, in my case, so obvious it hardly needs saying.

With regards to the snare, though, I view mine more as the center of the clock, first...

Re: Restarting everything after 20 years at the age of 37?

You're in good company here. I quit drumming from age 21 to 51.

I've recovered most of my chops, but I don't put in enough practice time to have the polish I had when I was 19 and playing for...

Re: Worship drummer - variety?

Thanks for all the recent replies - this should keep me busy for a while, but I REALLY appreciated personal recommendations.

Re: Worship drummer - variety?

Thanks for the quick and helpful replies!

I know there's a lot of it out there, but I hoped to avoid wading through all the schlock to find the good stuff, so your suggestions are appreciated -...

Worship drummer - variety?

This question is for the many drummers on this site who listen to Christian music and/or play in church.

I'm looking for music that is outside the Hillsong genre (which I commend, but it's...

Re: Famous drummers....on or off the bass drum head?

As a variation on this question, anyone passionate about heel-up / heel-down?

I play heel up usually, but when I'm playing jazz with a walking bass line I put the heel down so I can play the bd...

Re: Raising your game to work with pro's. Tips, tricks and advice?

Even if you don't help write the song, you're writing the drum part :). I'd record each song in rehearsal stage and then go home and play along to the recording, trying variation after variation in...

Re: How to practice starting off songs

I agree with Odd-Arne. Listen to a steady click for as long as you need to while "hearing" the song in your head. Don't start playing until the two are in synch. Then you should be good.

Re: Just quit a band on Christmas Day

I know how you feel. I played back-up percussion in a friend's band in college and it's not the same as sitting in the driver's seat. We won a bar band competition, each getting a share of a gift...

Re: Keeping big band horns from dragging

I'm wondering about the acoustics of the room. Sometimes in a bad room the horns are hearing your echo off a nearby wall louder than they're hearing you - so they play to the echo. Or more likely,...

Re: Chronicling rental/backline kits from around the world!

I'm guessing Jack Daniels did a promo for live music clubs where they provided these free heads for the advertising. Not a bad idea!

Re: What Songs Would You Like to See Transcribed?

Also, if it's improve, you have to wonder about the irony of transcribing it so that you can play it verbatim. We've built machines that can fly, but we can't build a machine that flies the way a...

Re: Building vocabulary

Nice! I was formulating an answer as I read Drummingman's post, but Bermuda's answer said it very well.

In my experience, a healthy combination of practice, jamming with others and performing...

Re: Most efficient way to learn a new song for an audition

Try all the suggestions here if you need to, but first I suggest taking Ghostnote's advice and just sit down at the drums with your headphones on and listen to the song playing along as you learn it....

Re: Very first live gig!

I'm not a tech, but have seen mics set to a figure 8 pattern between hi-hat and snare to pick up both. (You'll know better than I whether that particular mic is capable of picking up that pattern.)

Re: Encouragement!

I just re-read this Larry. I think you may have summed up musicianship in this one short sentence.

We don't work on technical skills for the sake of blazing chops, we work on them so that our...

Re: What's the worst drumming mistake you've heard on a professional recording?

The first small fill in "Eye of the Tiger" is rushed and far from solid to my ears. I think it's between verse 1 and verse 2 (or the first and second half of verse one, depending on how you count...

Re: What do you use to haul your hardware

I have a plywood box on casters about 30" wide, 48" long and 24" deep.

One corner is boxed in for the snare. The throne seat goes on top of that (upside down) to protect the skin. The rest of...
