Re: Jazz comping speed - wrist/finger

The LH doubles don't need to be loud. Maybe get on a practice pad or snare drum and work on anything with a lot of left hand doubles, playing in the p-mp range-- with stick heights around 1-3"....

Re: The level system?

Yep. There really isn't an alternative method to this, is there? People may emphasize it to whatever varying degrees, but there's really just paying attention to form and efficiency, using this...

Re: "intermediate level drum kits jazz" which to buy?. and which choose..

Any of those will be great for you. I suspect the Sonor and Tama will sound better than the Catalinas, which are mediocre-sounding. The current Yamaha Stage series are supposed to be great, so maybe...

Re: Drummers who don't play/use a ride cymbal.

For awhile in the 80s, maybe the 70s, Terry Bozzio didn't use oneó he said Tony Williams did everything there was to do with it, or something like that.

Re: Whiplash Oscar win - will it spur sudden interest in "jazz drumming"?

I dunno, it's not exactly inspirational, is it? It's pretty content-free compared to movies that influenced a lot of people-- like Searching For Bobby Fisher or Rounders. They actually told you...

Re: No rudiments taught in marching band?

I don't think I was taught anything drum-specific at all in my entire time in school-- junior high through high school-- maybe a little bit on the technique for playing misc percussion in band, and a...

Re: Is it OK to talk about the movie "Whiplash" yet?

Wow, I finally saw the thing, and it is truly godawful. Kind of amazed at the amount of horrible playing they allowed into the movie. I wish they had at least gotten real drummers for the supporting...

Re: What will it take for me to be able to do this?

That's not right. He's playing "French" grip with a couple of things on the cowbells, but the busy stuff on the drums is a ~normal snare drum grip. The only place I'm seeing significant finger...

Water by PJ Harvey (http://youtu.be/IHWLMIiVsHM) is a good one- in 5/4.

Re: Crossing hands on fills

It always feels like a special occasion when I do the crossovers- I have to decide to do them, and basically never do them in normal playing. I think the main reason to do them is if you're a really...

Re: Crossing hands on fills

Updating, after I thought about it for a second:

There should never be a high tom on the next note after a FT note-- FT notes are the long notes from the book (quarters, dotted quarters, and tied...

Re: Crossing hands on fills

You shouldn't ever need to go R over L doing that routine- the only cross over you should have to do is when your L has to play the floor tom-- when there's a long note on 2, & of 2, 4, or & of 4....

Re: The Drum Set As Melody Instrument

I dig that you've been trying to say that the timbre of a "circular membraned instrument" is inherently more complex than that of a plucked string. Clearly the implication of that is not what you...

Re: Beginner: Issues Reading Music Sheet

Hard to explain the basics of reading music through a blog post-- it's really something you should do it in person. A professional teacher should be able to get you up to speed counting and reading...

Re: The Drum Set As Melody Instrument

Sorry you don't like what he's doing, but he does know how to play them very well. Probably better than you, and 95% of the people on the forum. I don't want to embarrass him, but that's the deal.

Re: The Drum Set As Melody Instrument

To me everything on the drums is melodic-- virtually anything with two or more notes in a row. A triangle part, the break on Birthday (http://youtu.be/wNcJ3jYOQGg), whatever. It's an inherent thing....

Re: Help! Left hand doubles in jazz comping

These exercises (http://www.cruiseshipdrummer.com/2013/07/paradiddle-diddle-variations-for-jazz.html) should sort out the structure of all that. But make sure you can comp effectively with just one...

Re: US/Canadian exchange rates INSANE

The dollar is surging right now vs. other currencies, apparently-- a euro costs $1.125, which is the lowest it's been in a long time. Which kind of sucks, because I've got a tour coming up in April,...

Re: Is "pocket" what you play or how you play it?

It just has to do with the quality of your time, and the way you place your notes-- some quality beyond just playing accurate time. I'm sure someone has made up a scholarly definition for it, but I...

Re: Tony Williams Hi hat on "Fred"

Nice, the first Tony record I ever bought, in like 1983. I should learn this tune, too. Keep working on the real part, playing the whole thing with your hand. It's a challenge the first time you get...

Re: Question about hand technique on the texas shuffle

May be-- nobody's calling me for blues gigs, so I'm not really an expert on making those people happy. Usually in the past when I didn't know a style the way someone wanted, they would tell me how...

Re: Question about hand technique on the texas shuffle

Hmm, not sure I totally understand your question. You have a lot of freedom in how you play it. All anyone wants to hear is the shuffle rhythm, a strong backbeat, and a strong quarter note pulse. You...
