Louder with or without port?

My impression is that my son's kick drum (Yamaha rock tour) is louder with a non-ported resonant head than with a ported head. Does anybody have any definitive measurements?

The reason I ask is...

Re: Pro Ludwig, Anti Guitar Center

Go to pretty much any music related website and you find folks bashing GC. I admit that I've been frustrated there myself by low-competence employees, out of stock items, damaged items and such. ...

Re: Yamaha Rock Tour series discontinued... ):

Go ahead and pull the trigger. My son is extremely happy with his, and the price is so good that I was almost able to pay for it with the proceeds from the sale of his heavily gigged Tama Rock Star...

Re: How to make my kick sound less boomy without using muffling?

Both of my son's kits have full resonant heads with no ports, and nothing inside the drum. He likes that sound for acoustic gigs. At gigs where the kick drum has a microphone, we cut down on the...

Re: Yamaha Rock Tour--Holy Guacamole!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So guys, this thread has confused me a bit regarding the construction of the drums (I'm not a drummer myself, so please excuse my ignorance). I bought the "smoke sunburst" for my son. I just...

Re: Yamaha Rock Tour--Holy Guacamole!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm not sure what you mean by "over". Do you mean using a G1 as a resonant head with the G2 as the batter?

Re: Yamaha Rock Tour--Holy Guacamole!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We have the floor tom sounding great and cutting through the mix, but the 12" still needs some tinkering.

Re: Yamaha Rock Tour--Holy Guacamole!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, the Rock Tour shells are noticeably thin and light. I'm not a drummer myself (guitar), but wouldn't the thickness of the shell be a design feature that has a lot to do with tone and resonance?

Buying genuine Yamaha replacement parts?

Hi all. I occasionally need various small parts (e.g., tension rods, foot pedal springs) and I would like to stick with genuine yamaha parts. I have an account on the yamaha site, but the shipping...

Re: Yamaha Rock Tour--Holy Guacamole!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No snare--just a 12", 16" and bass 22". The matching snare was another $230. My son has some kind of large steel yamaha snare that really pops that will probably be used with this kit. He also has...

Re: Yamaha Rock Tour--Holy Guacamole!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the correction. I'm a guitar player myself, but I'm always happy to learn about the drums to help the kid.

The finish is smoke sunburst. I was kinda hoping he would go for the green...

Yamaha Rock Tour--Holy Guacamole!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Once again I have to pay tribute to the members of DrummerWorld—I was tipped off about the discontinued Rock Tour 3 piece shellpack from a posting on this site. My teenage son has found himself in...

Re: Oooops! Where can I buy yamaha drum parts?

Thanks for the tips! Yes, it is the "lug nuts" and the long screws that control tension that I need. Sorry for the wrong terminology. I'm a guitar guy, but I've become the "repair everything guy"...

Oooops! Where can I buy yamaha drum parts?

Yes, I'm an idiot. While rushing to change a snare head in poor lighting while using my 51 year old bifocal-needing eyes, I buggered up the threads on one of the inserts that the snare drum head...

Re: Adding a tom to a Sonor Safari - what tom?

I forgot to post, but I ended up finding a new 12" Force 1005 tom on ebay for like $40. The color is not a good match (kind of burgundy vs red sparkle, but no one ever notices), but the sound IS a...

Re: Help a Dad Out - Drum Shopping

My son (15) has found himself in a very successful band that gigs constantly around Atlanta, and since almost all the places they play serve alcohol, and none of the boys are old enough to drive,...

Re: Trying to decide Snare

Maybe you just need two snares??? My son uses a big loud steel yamaha snare (about $100 on sale) for classic rock, and he just pops a maple black panther on for something smoother with less pop. ...

Re: Do drummers ever use a "personal" PA???

Yes, the problem occurs only when they play outdoor events and use their own PA. Indoors, or on a house PA, they are fine. I am really thinking that we just need to buck up and get a better PA,...

Re: Do drummers ever use a "personal" PA???

Thanks for the input guys. I'll look into the powered sub option more, but I guess what we really need is just a better PA overall.

Do drummers ever use a "personal" PA???

Not really sure where to post this, or even how to ask the question, but I was wondering if drummers ever have their own amplification system (like a PA to amplify just the drums, instead of running...

Re: Ludwig Breakbeats vs Sonor Safari

If you search on here, you will find many extensive threads on the Safari. I was able to compare both kits side-by-side when deciding on a small venue/practice kit for my son who is in a very active...

Re: Sonor Safari

Remember to figure in the price of replacement heads of your choice in the cost of the kit. That will probably have a far bigger impact on sound quality/tone than any difference between the brands...

Re: Mis-matched finishes anyone play live?

My son has been playing a kit with a tom that mis-matches in shading the same as the red ones pictured in this thread. No one has noticed, and even the other parents of the band members and the band...
