Re: Jazz ride - triplet and 16th note

I think two things are being confused here:

1. Switching to/playing double time in a swing context.

2. Writing/interpreting the skip beat of the jazz ride pattern as a 16th note.

The first...

Re: Preparing for Cruise Ships. Some advice?

On several lines, including RCCL, musicians are sometimes being asked to do extra duties on embark day and/or port days, such as meeting and greeting people on the gangway. As far as I know, this is...

Re: Getting lazy and playing heel down

Add JR Robinson to the list of guys who do okay playing heel down on the BD pedal.

I play heel up on the HH to get a better chick sound but play a mixture of heel down and heel up on the BD...

Re: Preparing for Cruise Ships. Some advice?

Far be it from me to step on the excellent Mr. Bishop's toes, but he has neglected to mention that you should:

1) Engage in a dedicated program of nutrition and supplementation to strengthen your...

Re: Free book about drumming-no strings attached

I've got lots of drum books with no strings connected to them. What makes this one different?

Re: Dave King's Rational Funk ~ thoughts? opinions? comments?

Hmm...I'm either about to pull the hood off a good joke or clear up a misunderstanding.

I was being facetious, Larry. I thought it suited the subject.

Re: seamlessly switching between singles and doubles around the kit

Again, it would depend on what you're after. But since you're after "seamlessly switching", moving through the various exercises at one tempo might be the best approach.

Re: Jazz

As has been said repeatedly, I don't know about relative difficulty. I think a lot of that is - as has also been said - familiarity. If you grew up (as I did) surrounded by jazz then the language...

Re: seamlessly switching between singles and doubles around the kit

Whose hands are they? Your hands don't do a darned thing your brain doesn't tell them to. Luckily, we have a little bit of control over what it says to them.

One of my teachers once said, "You...

Re: Dave King's Rational Funk ~ thoughts? opinions? comments?

I don't know why anyone would bother. When I have time to sit down and watch a Youtube video, I want to get some information about actual techniques I can use not some arty farty guy wasting my time...

Re: seamlessly switching between singles and doubles around the kit

It doesn't matter. Either way works fine. But, keep track.

No, it's to improve the control and efficiency of your hands.

That depends on the tempo and your goals.

Re: Jazz Comping Bass Drum

Yeah, listen to a whole lot of jazz and learn the sorts of phrases that make up the language.

Alternatively, take the rhythm of the melody of jazz standards and play those. Start by simply...

Re: What's your practice routine?

Lately, it looks like this:

1. Think about practicing.

2. Get busy with teaching, teaching prep, gigs, daily life and neglect practicing.

3. Think about practicing.

4. Repeat 2.

Re: Brush technique

Florian Alexandru-Zorn is the current undisputed heavyweight champeen of that stuff.

Unfortunately, there aren't a lot of recorded examples on big name tunes.

Re: seamlessly switching between singles and doubles around the kit

I second the Stick Control suggestion, but here's what I'd do with it.

1. Choose a sticking pattern (e.g. RRLL)
2. Choose a number of strokes to be played per surface (e.g. 1, 2, 3, 4....8...)...

Re: Does independence just click one day?

Exactly, and at some point you're working on something that takes time away from other things that MAY be more important for functioning in most musical contexts.

Re: Brush technique

For those seeking a way to get a long, fat swing brush sound using matched grip, you can try the following.

Begin with RH at 3 o'clock, LH at 9 o'clock.

RH plays a tap on 1 and LH sweeps...

Re: Pre serial and early 70's black beauty. Values?ha

One usually values something in dollars in order to buy or sell it. If it's for insurance then it would be replacement cost that's at issue, not value in comparison to some other drum and the history...

Re: Does independence just click one day?

Yeah, this is true and why some use the phrase "coordinated independence".

Though I'm partial to Jim Blackley's notion of "coordinated independence". That is, the limbs may be playing together or...

Re: Pre serial and early 70's black beauty. Values?

Good luck with the "Late 70s BB is essentially a 60s COB" sales pitch. :)

I'd chuckle if a guy laid that on me. No offense.

Re: Advice needed! Spare me some knowledge DW!

A couple of things bother me here. Your friend is taking a pretty lax attitude to their students. "Winging it" is no way to bring a student along. And accordingly, while it's nice they've given you...
