Re: Rob Brown- Using a Metronome to Develop Feel

Re: TONY WILLIAMS FIVE NOTE RIDE PATTERN EXPLAINED

I often think that Tony aged backwards. He sounded better younger. I agree that in the 60's his playing is very amazing and it's always what I think of when someone mentions Tony. I really don't like...

Re: TONY WILLIAMS FIVE NOTE RIDE PATTERN EXPLAINED

Yeah it's a three beat phrase. A lot of the time he goes 1+2+3( )4+1 and continues the basic ride pattern. Or he will play the 5 note pattern two times in a row. Just listen to some of the...

Re: TONY WILLIAMS FIVE NOTE RIDE PATTERN EXPLAINED

WhoIsTony, it is definitely hard to get it as smooth as Tony. It's always hard to just put it into your playing without focusing on it too much. Hopefully it will come with time and patience.

I'm...

TONY WILLIAMS FIVE NOTE RIDE PATTERN EXPLAINED

Hey!

I made a video explaining how Tony Williams played five notes on the ride cymbal at fast tempos.

You'll need headphones since the audio is kind of quiet. Sorry!

Re: A Question To Any Tutors Or Pros

Your hands will almost never be the same, it's just how it is. But why would you only want to focus on the weak hand when practicing? Your right hand still needs to be fast to blaze a swing pattern...

Re: Where are the strong beats in odd signatures?

If you're playing in 5/4 and wanna play a nice rock/straight 8th feel play snare on the & of 2 and on 5. Bass drum on 1 and 4. That's just me though.

Re: School of music refusal

Lol at The New 'Bread'

If you want to get into a school for music you have to play music, not exercises. Transcribe people.

Re: Help with improving jazz vocabulary?

Dude, don't buy a bunch of books like I did. Transcribing is the way to go. It's the only way you will get better and if you can't notate drum music learn how.

Re: playing uptempo jazz with heel down on hi-hat

I agree with Todd. Especially in crazy modern stuff feathering probably isn't the greatest idea, but who knows? Just do what the music calls for...or do what the band leader is telling you to do...

Re: How can I develop SMOOTHness?

My time is pretty good, it's just that certain phrases or transitions can be bumpy. Or everything will be in time but I may have to compensate for being late in a certain phrase. Micro things. Kind...

How can I develop SMOOTHness?

I've been recording myself lately and have found that my playing isn't smooth all of the time and is rather choppy.

I've been playing for 3 1/2 years now. I'm in an advanced youth big band in...

Re: playing uptempo jazz with heel down on hi-hat

I usually do that heel-up bouncing kind of thing. It never gets tiring and in a lot of ways it helps your pulse. I find that keeping my heel down creates a lot of tension, but there's no reason why...

Re: Jazz Drummer Attempting to Get Marching Snare Technique Down

If I was you I wouldn't be in drumline unless you actually like it. It will make your jazz playing stiff. I played tenors and it sucked. Our teacher would always ride my technique because I wasn't...

Re: Jazz kicks/set-ups using Syncopation

The best set-up advice I ever gained was from Jason Palmer. Todd you're in Portland now so you probably know him. I'd talk to him about it.
