Re: remembering a tune

This happened to me frequently. I began to memorize the part of the tune that hooked me (e.g., the intro, chorus, a memorable lyric, etc.). I did this with careful, repetitive listening, trying to...

Re: New kit time :)

I agree. Ever since I went with a virgin kick I’ve not looked back. In addition, when I use a different set (e.g., one tom instead of two) the combo stands allow for greater setup flexibility.

Re: New kit time :)

I'm surprised Tama didn't make the cut ('cuz they're great drums with IMO the best hardware).

Re: What's actually going well for you in your world of music?

Wow! Lotsa good posts in this thread! I feel like I just had a shot of B vitamins.

Wifey & I just moved from a 120-year old house in the city to a 3-year old house 5 miles away in the countryside....

Re: Drummer’s Place In Band

“A lousy drummer can make a good band sound bad. A good drummer can make a lousy band sound great.”

Re: Is made in the US really that much better?

An American instrument is not necessarily better, be it a drum shell, guitar, or french horn. However, the ability for American companies to source better woods and better refined metals is superior...

Re: Ringo Still Filling the House

Really great. Warms my heart. That guy has affected so many people, and started so many on the road to drumming.

Re: Do you have a piece of equipment that you've used since day 1 and still use it regularly?

I don’t play anywhere without:

Iron Cobra Rolling Glide pedal
Tama Lever Glide hat stand
Tama ergo hydraulic throne with backrest

Without those three things, I’m not comfortable and no...

Re: Favorite Drummer

The guy who consistently blows my mind is Simon Phillips.

The guy whose style I enjoy trying to emulate is Robbie McIntosh.

Re: Musician vs Artist

Wow. Finally. Someone who agrees with me. I’m gonna have to visit Arkansas sometime.

If a work moves me emotionally, I consider that work a “piece of art”. Music, photo, painting, sculpture,...

Re: The 16x14 floor tom

Playing at churches for a few decades gave me the opportunity to play a wide variety of kits, from the “fusion” size (10, 12, 14x12, 20 kick) to old-school rock size (12, 13, 16x16, 18x16, 24 kick,)....

Re: The 16x14 floor tom

It's 14"x12".

I don't have an eye-candy pic with the full setup, however . . .

Re: Why Modern Pop Music Is So Awful To Some!!!

Good point.

I frequently listen to Apple Music “mixes” while working, hoping to hear new material that stokes me. What I hear most of the time is new material that sounds like it came from...

Re: Removing the tom mount off my Starclassic BD

It shouldn’t be glued on. If the mount/drum hasn’t been modified, then it’s probably just adhered over time.

Many guys have removed the mount and covered it with a plate.

Re: The 16x14 floor tom

pft. They sound the same when mixed into the music.

A 16x16 looks much better than a 16x14.

And a 14x14 looks much better than a 14x12.

But really, did we practice our rudiments today?

Re: 16th notes on Hi Hat

To get my 16th-note headspace right, I listen & ’shed to this guy (http://www.drummerworld.com/drummers/James_Gadson.html). I love his feel.

Re: Drum gear gimmicks that didn't really catch on

Peavey drums, with their lug-less tension system. Their resonance was truly amazing, though.

Re: Why Modern Pop Music Is So Awful To Some!!!

A musician/group is guilty of producing trivial music only if they know they’re taking the easy way, if they’re settling just to get done. Tech doesn’t eliminate laziness or lack of perserverence. If...

Re: Why Modern Pop Music Is So Awful To Some!!!

By “tech” I assume you mean the integration of computers, programmed drums and other instruments used in the process of writing & recording music. Not synthesizers as used by a keyboardist.

If my...

Re: Why Modern Pop Music Is So Awful To Some!!!

With dismay, I think rock will end up in the margins, just like jazz (a genre that dominated the music scene for most of the early-mid 1900s). It's hard to imagine what that'd be like, though.

Re: Did recording yourself make you a better player, and how?

Yes, recording myself made me a better player, but only by becoming a better listener first.

By listening to my imbalance on the kit (e.g., snare too loud, hi-hat too loud, kick not articulate,...

Re: Why Modern Pop Music Is So Awful To Some!!!

From a Wall St. Journal article:

I have only this one tune (https://youtu.be/465zEG7MKmo) from this genre in my paid-for music library, otherwise I never listen to rap/r&b/hip-hop. Because...
