Re: Snare Locking

I use Tuner Fish on my snare, and they never budge. And for me, every backbeat is a hard rim shot in exactly the same spot. So if you're knocking it off the rim, I've gotta see what you're doing....

Re: Show me your bass drums with contrasting inlaid hoops

That doesn't sound like it'd work, since liquid paper is white and Fiberskyn heads are more yellowish. But if you say so, I'd love to see how that looks.

Re: Another kit share story

Had it been me and I actually lent him my crash (which I most likely would not have done in the first place, as they're all Ks), as soon as I saw him bashing away like that, I'd have gotten up...

Re: Your full name on your bass drum head

You'd better be DAMN good if you're going to do that. Can you imagine some mediocre drummer who can't play in time or execute a decent fill getting up on stage with his name in huge letters all over...

Re: Show me your bass drums with contrasting inlaid hoops

Thanks.

Though I'm surprised no one asked about the Gretsch Round Badge sticker at the bottom of my front bass drum head. The head is a standard Remo Fiberskyn (with Remo logo), which I had laying...

Re: MB's Random Question Thread

I love Fiberskyn heads on the front of the bass drum. Though if you don't put anything inside of your kick, it will be quite boomy. Unless you're going for that wide-open Keith Carlock sound (which...

Re: MB's Random Question Thread

Porting a front bass drum head can affect the sound and feel. Typically, it increases the attack and provides a little less rebound, making it easier to bury the beater. But it can also take away a...

Re: Ludwig 75th Anniversary Kit

This is from that '84 catalog. WTH, a left-handed drum set???? Um, didn't they realize ANY kit can be right- or left-handed?

I guess they did because of that last sentence, but still.

Re: Show me your bass drums with contrasting inlaid hoops

Thanks. I did get a sample of that silver & black onyx pearl I was considering, but once I cut it to fit into the hoop inlay groove, I realized that wasn't the answer. I'd been contemplating using...

Re: MB's Random Question Thread

Not necessarily. If you're putting together a single set of cymbals to play on one kit, then it's more important that they go well together. Bright and dark cymbals may or may not go well together,...

Re: Show me your bass drums with contrasting inlaid hoops

I'm resurrecting this thread to show how my bass drum turned out. As a reminder, I was rewrapping a WMP 18" Catalina bass drum to match the rest of my kit, but since it came with inlaid hoops, I was...

Re: fans that are quiet

I love this fan. I have 3 in my apartment and 1 in my rehearsal studio. Inexpensive, quiet, blows a lot of air, and so far they've lasted years without any issues.

Re: Jazz Snare

Just curious why you're wanting to play jazz fusion with brushes. I listen to a ton of fusion (Weckl, Chick Corea, Pat Metheny, etc.), and I rarely hear anyone play with brushes—the music is usually...

Re: The thing you bought but you never use

It wasn't a hired gun situation. If it were, I would have just recorded it. We were a band, and my input was that the cowbell wasn't needed (and frankly didn't sound good). I never brought it up for...

Re: The thing you bought but you never use

Many years ago, I bought a brand new Yamaha Stage Custom Advantage (the one with the plastic Nouveau-style detachable lugs) to use as a gigging kit. We didn't have any gigs coming up and I never even...

Re: Is Buddy Rich REALLY the greatest drummer of all time?

That was nice of him. Clearly he wasn't an ass 24/7; I don't think anyone could, as that would be exhausting (and I did say that he could be an ass, not that he was always one).

But when I think...

Re: Is Buddy Rich REALLY the greatest drummer of all time?

That's more or less the crux of why I started this thread. It's the "of all time" part. I was never questioning Buddy's greatness, just whether he's ever been surpassed after all these years.

Re: Keith Carlock new Gretsch

Mua-ha-ha!!! That was my plan all along, to go to NAMM just so I could leave stick marks on everyone's soon-to-be-new kits. And I would have gotten away with it too, if it weren't for you meddling...

Re: Keith Carlock new Gretsch

Turns out I hit those toms a few times at 2016 NAMM. I bet if you looked super closely at the rack tom head when you first got it, you would have seen a tiny little stick mark from me :)

Re: So Frustrating trying to pick a new kit

This video provides a good demo of how the Renowns sound, in a variety of tunings, with the stock heads (clear Remo Emperors over Ambassadors). This is the newest Renown, and RN2, which has 3mm...

Re: So Frustrating trying to pick a new kit

I don't care if you don't like Gretsch. I like them and that's all that matters! :)

Seriously, even though you SAY you don't like Gretsch, I can promise if you got a set of Renowns you'd LOVE...

Re: Where Do You Position Your Beater

I position mine so that it's pretty much dead center on a 24" kick. However I no longer own a 24, so they hit a little above center on my 22" and noticeably above center on my 20". On my 18" (which...

Re: 20 years of Drum Set Evolution Summed up

Here's how I would sum up the changes in drums/drum design over the past 20 or so years.

Shells:

THEN - High-end drums were mostly constructed of a single species of wood, i.e. all maple or all...

Re: Why is MSRP so far out of whack with street prices?

On that note, I'd be very interested in checking out an INDe kit in person. They sound great in every video I've seen, plus I'm digging the hardware and overall look. I was hoping you'd be at NAMM,...
