Re: Drumming footwear

Same - I tried barefoot, I tried Doc Martens, but it works best with Converse.

Re: What's the worst kit you've had to play on?

I was in search of a rehearsal studio where I could practice drums, and found a cheap one. Upon entering the drum room, he said: 'and we've got a nice little jazz kit here' - it was the tiniest drums...

Re: Rehearsal Question

Depends on the band. Some like to have people around and make a party out of it, my band(s) don't like other people at the rehearsal because it can be distracting and irritating.

Re: Hit like a girl

100 % would not enter.

Don't give a damn if I'm worse or better than another woman.

I find it also quite patronizing to write 'girl'. Male drummers aren't referred to as 'boys' either.

Re: Lifting weights and drumming

Yeah, I'm doing black metal - there's a lot of blast beats and fast drumming, definitely helps for that.

Re: Lifting weights and drumming

Especially the cross trainer, even just 15-20 minutes 3-4 times a week, with the incline set quite high, my blast beat endurance has absolutely exploded. And I'm also losing weight quite nicely....

Re: Lifting weights and drumming

I've been working out again for the past 7 weeks (very intensely, 5-6 days a week) - alternating cardio and weight training to tone. It's given my endurance and drumming a massive boost, everything...

Re: Mobile phone for recording

You can use a phone for recording, we used to do it for months - but it's not worth it. I bought a Tascam DR-08 and there just isn't a comparison.

Re: Soundcheck Beats

If I get a soundcheck - sometimes there is only time for a line check - then I just play a few times around the kit. Normally it's straight to playing half a song with the whole band straight after.

Re: Drum friendly houses in London?

I have my acoustic kit in my bedroom - I share the house with 3 other people (all goths/industrial/ebm types). I've been drumming there for the past 2 years, with silencer pads on them. It's not...

Re: What the audience hears

Yes, I had the same - someone took videos of our last gig and I was impressed at how good my cymbals sound. I was never too convinced they sounded alright when I was sitting behind the kit - yet from...

Re: A singer makes drumming so much easier

I'm doing that anyway - when we rehearse new songs I try every with every verse/chorus different things that sound good before settling on a particular one (though I have to record all my rehearsals...

Re: A singer makes drumming so much easier

I'm sure I'll get there eventually, I've only been drumming for just over a year, and in a rehearsal studio for half a year :)

A singer makes drumming so much easier

Back in February I joined a black metal band - the guitarist did the singing beforehand, but he decided to concentrate on playing guitar, so we rehearsed without a singer for months.

Then a...

Re: THE CLASSIFIEDS - For Sale / Wanted

Anybody in London (UK) selling a snare drum? Preferably steel, would pay up to 80 for it, doesn't need to include heads. Can collect in London, or if you are willing to ship, happy to pay for...

Re: From the other side - how to prepare your kit (& yourself) for PA.

Man, I should have read that before my first gig last week. Sounded fine during soundcheck, but when we started playing, after the first song all I could hear was my drumming. (I know nothing about...

Re: Girl drummers

If I'd play in a low cut top, I'd be afraid my boobs will pop out during playing... not that I'm playing that wild, but you never know! It's all about practicality for me.

Re: Place to practice drums in London?

how much is it to rent a room? It'd be easy for me to get there from my workplace after work, and I'm fed up playing with the silencer pads in my room....

Re: Handclaps in recordings - yay or nay?

Yes, why not - anything that adds to the sound and makes it more interesting is good, IMO. I'm thinking of shamanic/folk music now especially.

Re: Solving drumming problems with dreaming

I often do this, I have my most creative moments just before I wake up and when I'm half asleep.

Re: Drum muffling gone wild

Well, my kit is in my bedroom, my bass drum is full with my summer clothes (and in summer I stuff my winter clothes in it) - it's still loud enough to be heard in every room of the house :D Once I...
