Re: Good ear plugs(or other sound attenuation methods) for liver performance...?

http://www.earasers.net/ and don't look back. They are 90% of my custom molded Sensaphonics plugs and way better than the Westone ones I had. $40 over the counter at Guitar Center. Complete no...

Re: Blues Drum Kit

Deep drum will have a wetter sound, better for shuffling on, less rat-a-tat. Even today if all you're doing is traditional blues a loosely tuned deep snare gets "that" sound. Or is it that "that"...

Re: How LOUD were the classic rock bands??

A watt is a watt. But how the power of an amplifier is determined is different. It used to be the RMS of the voltage peaks of a 1kHz sine wave into a given impedance. That was because the power...

Re: How LOUD were the classic rock bands??

When rock bands started playing in arenas and various halls, PA's were non-existent. You were lucky if someone scraped together two or three Altec A7 Voice of the Theater speakers on each side of...

Re: What kind of grip does this drummer use?

I see a lot of this kind of technique these days. Because they're not gripping tightly, there's not that much shock on the wrists. It's mostly fulcrum on the middle finger and finger control on the...

Re: Evans EQ Pad

Depends on how much damping you want. If you watch the Bob Gatzen videos, he puts it a bit more than 45 degrees. So when the head first vibrates it bounces off, but falls back against the head to...

Re: Angle Grinding Rims

The other possibility is wood hoops. My current fav snare has wood hoops and with the snares off, I can do pretty convincing conga patterns with my hands.

Re: Guitarist comment on drummers

As a former full time guitarist, my thing with drummers (and what I endeavor to do as a drummer) is providing a foundation that you can count on. It's more than constant fills. It's changing the...

Re: Tips for easy loading - my car my way

I actually put my hardware bag across the back of my Mazda 3 hatch. I don't want to lift or drag it any further than that. Not a lot of overhang so it doesn't really increase the polar moment of...

Re: Going back in time

Aack! Foggy sounding doctor/lawyer stuff. Get something of this sort and really hear what's in there.

Re: Bass Drum Volume / Running Through PA

Nothing wrong with having something inside the bottom of the drum if it's not overly damping the heads. It helps to kill what's called a pipe resonance (think slapping over the end of a piece of 4"...

Re: Bass Drum Volume / Running Through PA

Congrats on getting back on the horse, as it were.

Yep, sustain will create a note that can be heard. Try taking the ring off the e-mad. Just the extra plastic ring is often enough damping. ...

Re: Straying out of my comfort zone

I'm so tired of that big overhanging boom soundpeople mangle kick drums into these days. Takes away from the time and any sort of part you might play on the drum other than a four on the floor. ...

Re: Now this is what I call (linear) grooving!

I love that kind of stuff. Keeps the groove going but makes it interesting.

Re: Sonor-king of the micro kits?

I own the Sonor. The bass drum can be made to work. Here's something we did in a little winery tasting room that's really live. No help from carpets on the floor.

Re: Comparing oneself to others (drummers)

Sometimes what you think you might have done there if you were playing is just your musical imagination. Maybe you wouldn't have been actually able to do it either, or decided against it in the...

Re: Comparing oneself to others (drummers)

I think it's human nature to compare oneself to others. After all you need some sort of reference point as to whether you're getting where you want to go. I think the trick is to learn from all of...

Re: The false perception of Luan

Been building speaker cabinets out of the stuff for years. Nice warm sound without being too resonant. Makes perfect sense for a drum shell if you want a soft warm sound, probably at a low tuning.

Re: Hahahahahahahaha :)

This is what happens when folks focus on some fancy part and miss the point. All the notes are in there somewhere, but the music was lost. Pretty common disease in my experience. Playing right now...

Re: I've got the "looper" blues

Here's another thought. Thinking back to my gig last night. Some, fairly competent, guitarists don't understand how to comp. They are so busy, use full tone, or are so loud, that when they go to a...

Re: Rant: Who's in charge at Gibraltar??

This is the result of kneeling at the alter of Steve Jobs and his fail fast, fail hard mantra of "disruptive" innovation. I call it "flail fast, flail hard". I work for another huge silicon valley...

Re: I've got the "looper" blues

I was thinking the same thing as Jim as I was going through the thread. Run an output (or split) off the looper to a Hot Spot where you can hear it but he can't.

I tried doing a couple of things...
