Re: first kit.... bass drum too big?

And if you tune a 12/14/16 right they can certainly boom loud and low as well.

Re: first kit.... bass drum too big?

I would go for the 14/16 floor tom combination. If you get the 16/18, then a 13" rack tom will give you uneven intervals, and a 14" rack tom will leave you with 24, 14, 16, 18, which is hard to...

Re: Tama Superstar SK Hyper Drive or PDP 805 Series

If you want low punchy floor toms, you should just tune your floor toms low. Buying one kit over another is not going to be the difference between being able to go low and punchy and having to go...

Re: older Taye drums?

I have only praises to sing of Taye drums and of the company and its policies. I own a set of StudioMaples myself, however, regardless of the brand, you almost always get what you pay for. ...

Re: Bringen out da BOOM!!!

For the snare, coated on the batter, clear on the snare. As far as heads go, in my experience, you can get more out of tuning it up. I have a 14x5, and I cranked the bottom up with the 4 lugs...

Re: Bringen out da BOOM!!!

I would advise clear two-ply heads for the batter and clear single-ply for the resonant, at least on the toms. If you want good sustain without any ringing, I would advise tuning the heads up to...

Re: help on Taye

I have a StudioMaple set from them. I love way it sounds. I replaced the heads on the toms, although the stock heads were pretty good to start. I spoke directly with Katy Chen about my order as...

Re: Dw drums.

I think that actually the thing about discounts is that the authorized dealers can only advertise a price of 40% off the list, because, I know with cymbals, you can get Paistes for 50% at...

Re: how important is rudiments? + i need general help

Also (not to ramble) but realize that whenever you do a fill, it should not be just random playing, it should be rooted in rhythmic variations that you know. Do you think that great drummers just...

Re: how important is rudiments? + i need general help

If you want more rudiments to practice you should go to your local drum store and pick up a Vicfirth rudiment chart. It has like 40 or 50 to do. Obviously you won't be able to play many of them at...

Re: Factory tuning on DW drums...

Yeah, I went and visited the DW factory this summer, and apparently their new thing is going to be building drums with special lugs that have the same powder on them that fire alarms do, so if you...

Re: 6ply vs 8ply

I tend to prefer the sound you get out of a 6 ply drum, and Tal Wilkenfeld is soo good (guy before me's icon)

Re: Using Income tax money to buy drums/equipment?

Any 600 or 1200 bucks coming into my house from Bush is going straight back out to Obama, end of story.

Re: HELP: Pearl Masterworks or DW Collector's

Personally, I prefer the Masterworks series. I'm sure that DW, or for that matter, any set in that price range, will be of comparable quality, it mostly comes down to preference. I like the Pearls...

Re: Do you think drum lessons are necessary?

The other thing about not taking lessons is that if you only learn to play in the style of your band and play to be adequate within the band, when and if the band breaks up, whether it be...

Re: Flip the Kit?

I would suggest just practicing a lot of rudiments and two-handed rhythmic patterns. The way I brought my left hand up to speed (and it still isn't as good, but is close) was by playing two...

Re: Post your Greatest Weakness

Buzz roll, hand-hand-foot triplets (single BD). I always start off fine, but after I go for about 10 or 20 seconds I end up playing the bass drum at the same time as one of my hand strokes.

An...

Re: Do you think drum lessons are necessary?

The way I see it, lessons are just one the many things that help you become a better drummer. Taking lessons should not replace things like playing with other musicians or teaching yourself, but...

Re: Anything "Bad" About Taye Studio Maples?

I second that, there isn't anything that is really wrong with the drums themselves. Some people say that they aren't aesthetically pleasing enough, but I think colors like Golden Amber, Caramel...

Re: these sizes too big?

I'm not sure how much volume affects the tone though, so I may just be turning out meaningless numbers

Re: these sizes too big?

And while this may not affect my original question, it is interesting to note that the ratio between the volumes of an 18x16 floor tom and a 16x16 floor tom is closer to 1 than the ratio between the...

Re: these sizes too big?

the extra half inch of depth of a 10x8.5 gives the drum 105% of the volume of the 10x8 which could possibly be for any number of things that I don't really want to figure out/list

thanks for the feedback guys, keep it coming if you have any other opinions, I love hearing it! To clarify a few things, the set would most likely stay in the studio and would not be used for regular...

these sizes too big?

Hi guys, I was wondering what everyone thought of a 12,13,16,18 tom setup. I like to tune my toms really high to get a good feel from them with the sticks, but I hate to choke them and lose tone, so...
