I'm not a Jazz cat but I like playing unported when possible. In addition to some of the things you have already said ,I find that the pedal makes a difference. Roundish linear cams work best for me....

I don't currently own a 13". I don't dislike them but I am not fond of the ol' 12/13/16. I have had a few of those. 12/14/16 always sounded better to me.

14" racks seem harder to come by than...

One of my guitarists' hearing is shot. His rig is too loud. Everyone else cranks up to keep up with him. My 26" was getting lost at rehearsal . I finally got him down to a point where I can hear it....

I'm with Larry. My snare is all rimshots. It just sounds better for rock. Just adjust the volume of your rimshots. They don't have to be loud.

There might wrap/finish issue with temperature extremes. Touring drums live in trailers for months at a time. Just avoid DIRECT sunlight.

There are definitely similarities. It seems to have more body to me.It sounds like a thicker shelled drum, which it is. With the exception of old Imperial Star/King beats,I've never been a fan of...
