Re: Anger, dismay and confusion

To clarify a bit more, I've had live gigs recorded and I've been okay with the results. What I noticed from this recording of our rehearsal is just how loose and sloppy I allowed things to become....

Re: Anger, dismay and confusion

I record regularly and I don't have an issue with my performance when I know I am being recorded or when I play live. Well, I do sometimes have issues with it, but that's not what I'm talking about...

Anger, dismay and confusion

Those were my emotions when I listened to a recording of a band rehearsal from a couple months ago. I didn't know the guitarist was recording us until after. What I heard upon playback was positively...

Re: The Supra returns ;)

I think about this whenever the subject of drum sounds comes up. When a certain drum sound—or any instrument's sound—has been used for decades, it becomes ingrained in our DNA as listeners. Whether...

Re: Drummers that can't tune drums.

Tuning drums is really ridiculous, when you think about it; eight or ten lugs on each side, times four or five or maybe more drums; an ambiguous fundamental with overtones; intervals between batter...

Re: Completely out of touch old fart irrelevant opinion - but,

There was a time in my life when I took the "get off my lawn" attitude about music, being mad that other people weren't "as hip as me" and complaining that everyone liked junk or whatever. But I...

Re: Unpopular Drumming Opinion Thread

If the hands are doing the same thing, which they often are not in drum set playing.

Re: Unpopular Drumming Opinion Thread

I think traditional grip does add a layer of difficulty for certain things, but I'm not convinced that's true of all things. I don't hold a pencil or spoon the same way I hold a hammer. Neither does...

Re: The Speed Obsession

I don't think the preoccupation with instrumental acrobatics is limited to drummers. Singers may not be judged on how fast they sing, but people do notice things like the high notes or the range of...

Re: Bo rants!

My barometer is usually comparing my bad band experiences to rogue_drummer's. If mine is worse than any of his, I know it's not gonna work out.

Re: Yolanda Charles on drummers! :)

I'm sorry, did the subject of drummers come up in that video? I must have missed it.

Misbehaving,

Re: Some tips for you GC Drum-Off gladiators

Interesting and well-written piece, Bill.

I have to admit, I was a bit surprised by point #1. I admit I don't follow the GC Drum-Offs very closely, but I guess I found this an unexpected and...

Re: The Speed Obsession

I think with all art, it's difficult to separate our amazement at how difficult something is from our enjoyment and appreciation of it.

Re: More amazing Simon - "most farmer's wives in Bulgaria dance in 9/8"!

I have a total man-crush on Simon. Friggin' genius. And I don't throw that word around lightly. Not to mention, a very bright, erudite cat. The total package. Love him.

Re: New Gretsch 3 ply Broadkaster line

3-ply shells were used in the 1950s. The 6-ply shells came in around the late-1950s and stuck around through the 1960s. Both featured round badges.

Re: Ringo's Drumming: Harder Than It Looks

I think musicians struggle with this stuff more than non-musicians. For many years, I had no use for Ringo, even though I loved The Beatles. I just didn't hear the flashy stuff that was required to...

Sounds great. Well, if you guys come through my neck of the woods, I will make plans to catch the show. I'm sure you guys have a busy itinerary when traveling, but I'd love to show you around town if...

Re: Jon "Bermuda" Schwartz here!

Jon, are there any plans for a tour with the new CD? I know you guys have come through Detroit quite a few times over the past few years but I've been unable to attend and would like to change that...

Re: Worst song ever

I don't know if the number is growing; you can't base a statement like that only on personal experience talking to people you come across.

Why are you calling them a boy band? Just because they...

Re: Amazing (old) studio footage - Simon Phillips with The Coors :)

I feel the same on all counts. I was so obsessed with Simon as a kid that I sought out any records there was even a rumor he played on (this was before you could easily look it up online). I still...

Re: Worst song ever

I like a lot of BEP's music, but that one is awful. And I have a really bad sports association with it because they played it at the arena during a particularly painful loss by one of my teams.

Re: Audio only snare drum comparison between...

Snare drum B on this recording doesn't sound like the other captures of Guru snares I've heard.

It's funny, though; just goes to show our tastes are very subjective. The fact that you like the...

Re: Drumming with repetitive strain injury (RSI)

I thought this was a new thread until I saw "Pollyanna" and her old avatar and realized it's from a few years ago.

Anyway, I'll use it as an excuse to jump on my soapbox about these things.

If...

Re: Two and four groovy or... Not?

The whole groove/beat placement thing was the last thing I really figured out as a drummer. Even when I first thought I understood it, I later realized I actually did not.

I get it now. I'm not...
