Re: Who uses Moongel?

Not me. I may use an external dampner on a very lively snare drum, mainly during recording but that's it.

Re: Joe Cocker: The Only Singer To Make A Beatles Song Sound Even Better

I must say I much prefer Sting's version of "A Day in the Life".

Re: I went away and everything changed!

If everything didn't at least evolve there would be some odd! Pleased for you getting back into drumming. It made me think that I should be thankful for never stopping because whilst I'm somethimes...

Re: Beyond - dynamics - spaces

That's Steve Smith playing with the Hiromi Trio btw. Worth a listen, but not as hi-fi as the original material on here.

Re: Beyond - dynamics - spaces

I have never seen Simon Phillips play better than here - and I've seen / listened to a hell of a lot over the years. Everything is just immaculate. I can't even begin to heap enough praise on his...

Re: Snare size for ghost notes

Ghost strokes are in no way affected by shell depth. The sensitivity of the drum - it's quality, head choice & tuning and the snares themselves are major factors, but not shell depth.

As with most...

Re: Hearing the upbeat as the downbeat

Does anyone have a transcription of "Rock n Roll" intro? I played this whilst depping for a band recently and the rest of the band didn't understand it so we had to dumb it down!

Re: Hearing the upbeat as the downbeat

Well, look - if the guy's so great he'll relish writing down the phrasing for you, right? (or maybe........)

Re: What's your latest purchase?

I picked up a pair of Paiste Signature Dimensions Crunch hats at a price that removed any risk (I only heard them on videos first). Wow - absolutely thrilled with them. Only the 2nd Paiste cymbal I...

Re: Hearing the upbeat as the downbeat

I've got to agree with the remarks about being able to discuss this in your band situation. Any musicians that feel they are above that process are ignorant and / or afraid of revealing that they...

Re: Virgil Donati

Personally I'm disappointed he's gone to DW but that's just because I'm not a great fan of their stuff. What's important is what he's doing, which is driving drumming forward like no other player at...

Re: Yamaha original Maple Custom kit - Is it worth it??

I have to agree with this. I've had mine for quite some years now too and shudder at the thought that I considered selling it at one point. I believe they're sounding warmer. Sure - it may be my ear,...

Re: Applications for 13" tom

I used to have a Yamaha 8000 13" tom and it was the most resonant & exceptional drum. Was so sad to see it go when I had to part with that kit. Anyway, for the most part I set it up to the left of...

Re: Musically, what are you involved with at the present?

What an interesting topic!

To answer the questions:

1. How many bands are you in?
Two really. One is a party / wedding / function band that operates under a couple of identities, primarily...

Re: Post your Zoom Q3 recordings :)

Well I must share everyone's general enthusiasm for the Q3. I really should make better use of mine! Some really nice kit sounds posted already.

Here a few things I have online:

Re: Ludwig Millenium Brass Snare- NSD

As others have said $200 is a fraction of what this drum is worth. I have the same drum (with case) and I knew that the run was limited to 100 of each of the four varients. I'm curious to know...

Re: Carter Beauford

I agree, it's a bit surprising. I wonder if enough players appreciate just how good he is.

Re: Is Dennis Chambers ill?

I saw DC in New York in May and was very concerned then. I'm not going to speculate here but if a particular diagnosis were to emerge I wouldn't be surprised. It affected the gig for me in the sense...

Re: OH technique - front to back?

How does it sit in the mix with the other mics? I mean, your HH will have be close-mic'd, right? If you had two HHs then there's a stereo view, or if the Ride had a dedicated mic?

Again, if you...

Re: Yamaha PHX - am I missing something?

Isn't it the case that Carter Beauford tried the PHX, ended up replacing all the toms with Recording Customs and then just switched back completely to the RCs?

Re: Vinnie Colaiuta

Personally the thing that shocked me the most when VC went to Ludwig & Paiste was he suddenly had two crashes up front and the ride pushed to his right. I hadn't seen that setup in all the time I...

Re: Loss of too many drum shops in the UK

I've used Graham Russell Drums online too and they're good. Also eCymbals.co.uk have done me good deals.

But I really miss John Rose Music (Sale, MCR) as already mentioned here. I spent ŁK's there...

Re: What amp should I get for backing tracks?

I use my Roland PM30 amp. It's a great piece of equipment, albeit rather heavy. It does have detachable wheels however & aux speakers.

Re: How often do you break/drop your sticks?

I drop a stick every now & then, but it's hardly ever an issue. In terms of breaking them - I never do because I throw them out (donate them to a student!) when they lose their balance through wear....
