Re: Do you enjoy playing less if you are a professional ?

Great question!

I think about this a lot, because I was a full-time pro and now I'm not.

I enjoyed "playing" more when I was a professional because I was much better!!! When your life's goal...

Re: should albums that have been "digitally enhanced" have a label saying so?

In my opinion auto-tuning is vastly overused. It's definitely audible on a lot of albums, and not in a good way.

However, there are producers that use it effectively, and you'll never know. ...

Re: should albums that have been "digitally enhanced" have a label saying so?

It's kind of funny.

The Beatles used the best technology available to them. I'm sure there were some people who said, "They're cheating because they are using overdubs, and not doing it all at...

Re: Barefoot Drumming

I used to play exclusively barefoot, but then one day I said "Hey, why don't I try playing in my sneakers?"

It was actually much easier to switch than I expected. I wear pumas, but I've known...

Re: Rush on The Colbert Report

could Neil Peart be any cooler?

To rip that hard and be that funny in this context . . .

oh, and if there was ever a doubt that Rush has a really good sense of humor, check this

Re: The feel good after a gig...

I don't think the club still exists, but there was a small venue on the outskirts of San Francisco called the Pound. It was a legendary building amidst a cement factory, an industrial recycling...

Re: Bass drum dimensions - effect on sound

This is a beautiful sentence. It simultaneously illustrates how challenging it is to describe tone with words, and also shows your passion for sound.

. . . like a fine wine.

Re: Favorite metal drummer?

You're actually making some good points, but just be aware that you sound like a total jerk-off. I hope this is not your intent.

I would add Charlie Benante of Anthrax to the category of...

Re: Knowing the history of the drums

I basically agree with the points you are making, except I have a different take on young drummers.

It's not like back in the day, young drummers were well schooled in the history of drumming, but...

Re: Drummers turned great Frontmen

Eddie Van Halen was originally a drummer, and Alex was originally the guitarist. They swapped, and the rest is history.

Re: Does learning other instruments gives any benefits in drumming? Just wondering..

How did it work out with the band you were putting together?

Back when I was in high school (I'm not over the hill yet, but it was back in the day when I walked to school in the snow,...

Re: Kit Sharing: My Personal Hell

This is my take:

Sharing kits can be bad for drummers.

Sharing kits is good for the audience.

What's good for the audience is good for the drummer.

It sucks having to use some one else's...

Re: Don't use a metronome?

"What happens is a law of physics gets activated when “the drum” is played properly. It’s a 12/8 rhythm where all the 3’s 4’s 6’s and 12’s subdivide - but this is not intellectual at all when you’re...

Re: Is their an etiquette for "sitting in"

I agree with everything that's been said.

Here's a funny/not-really that funny story about an unwanted sit in.

So I'm playing a gig, and we're gonna do three sets. I'm outside smoking a...

Re: Grohl or Bonham [Jason]??

I think it should be Jason.

Sure there are better drummer's out their, Dave Grohl being just one. But I think it's really classy of the Zep guys to include John's son. To us and the world,...

Re: Bonham swing/straight feel explained

Getting programmed drums to sound "natural" is an art form with many masters.

To get a nice programmed swing, you need to adjust not just the timing, but also the relative volume (velocity in...

Re: Syncopation & Coordination

Answer 1: Syncopation has nothing to do with the time signature. It has to do with how the hits fall in relation to the pulse. In general, things are syncopated when they are off the pulse. ...

I of course don't believe this, but the...

"If I don't play for three days the audience notices, if I don't play for two days the critics notice and...

If the other...

Re: Showing off v. Professionalism

The topic of the thread has evolved. The discussion is now about different styles of playing/performing, how showy to be, how busy to be etc . . .

This is a VERY good topic to discuss.

I'm shocked!!!

The quality of the discussion in this thread is actually evolving, as opposed to devolving.

most unusual on the internet.

Try making the bottom head really loose, and really tight, and matched to the top head. See how it effects the...

Re: What do you play in a drumstore to impress the guys from the drumstore?

Honesty is the best policy. BEFORE you use equipment, ask the staff if it's cool. Don't be afraid to tell them you're a beginner. It's really the noobies doing their neil peart "impressions" that...
