I also play openhanded and been doing it for 7 years now. I think it's a great way to play really "opens" everything up and you have more controll over what you are doing.

So, along with all these...

Re: Simon Phillips - playing odd time signatures.

Yeah but it's not like your "answer" is the right one, nothing is. It's just an opinion.

Re: Simon Phillips - playing odd time signatures.

Here's the 5/4 by the way. Love the way he starts very mellow and ends up going crazy.

Re: Simon Phillips - playing odd time signatures.

Very good post, SickRick.

And definitely not to be a smartass but the videos are actually from 1992. :)

Thought this was pretty cool, Simon demonstrating different time signatures.

Seriously, this blew my mind. I know it's an Jeff Porcaro groove orginally but Simon does it really good too in his own way. Awesome!

Re: Teaching Open handed as opposed to crossed

I'm righhanded but when I started to played the drums when I was 10 ( I'm 17 ), I went with open-handed playing because crossed feels so locked and just "wrong", it doesn't quite feel right. As the...

Still, one lesson with some playing around and something that will spark his interest can only do good.

Re: Teaching Suggestions

Can this kid play the drums at ALL? If he can't, I wouldn't start with him reading notes or rudiments. That'll bore him out. Let him play around and show him a few starters in the beginning.

Re: Simon Phillips

Well, Simon isn't trying to be Jeff, he has his own style and makes the song his own. That's problaby why.

Re: Exercises for open-handed players?

I've playing open-handed for as long as I've played drums ( 7 years ) and my advice is just to keep practice! Just play it and play and play it and you'll will eventually become more comfortable with...

Re: Chad Smith

I saw Chad In Stockholm 12/12 and he was brilliant. He did a very cool solospot and was extremely tight. A sold out show and the gig was great!

Re: Jeff Porcaro

I'm glad there are stuff like Georgy and English Eyes rather than those so beaten-to-death songs. :)

Re: Jeff Porcaro

That Georgy Porgy version is problaby my favorite ever. Jeff's groove with Paich's fanastic solo at the end makes for an incredible song!

I like to do a combination like this:

2 singles
