Re: Recording with four microphones

Thanks, guys. I appreciate all of these replies; great information.

I'm going to give it a shot.

If I come up with anything worth sharing, I will. :)

Recording with four microphones

Hi, guys. As the subject says, I've got four microphones. Three of them are these: http://www.amazon.com/Cascade-Microphones-Pair-Black-Gold/dp/B0047DWTPU and the fourth is an SM57.

I plan on...

Re: I needed a 1/32nd rest to make everything fit ...

Haha. The "8/4" is just a quirk of mine ... I write it that way because I hate starting measures with rests. It's pretty dumb, I know. :)

I gather this is hard to auralize without hearing it.

I needed a 1/32nd rest to make everything fit ...

I've got a question about transcription. I wrote a part for a song and it is, effectively: | 15/8 | 8/4 | 15/8 |

But ... I needed a 1/32nd note rest after the second measure of 15/8 to get the 1...

Re: Playing open handed

I know this thread was pretty well dead, but I felt like commenting and didn't want to start anew.

I've been playing for a little less than two years. I'm predominantly lefty (probably obvious,...

Re: How To Get A Dry Sound Outta Your Snare?

It wouldn't surprise me if my perception is totally backwards, but the snare in the video provided by the OP sounds more "wet" to me than "dry."

To me, the snare sound in "Bad Obsession" by Guns...

Re: Gretsch Catalina Maple - I thought they were better

Would you mind pointing me to an image of your Renown, if you've got it? I'd like to see how you've got it set up.

Thanks!

Re: Lars Ulrich

Great transcription.

When it comes to drum notation, sometimes I'm a little a thrown by the variations. Generally, I write hi-hat below the last line of the staff, below the kick, and I put the...

Re: Gretsch Catalina Maple - I thought they were better

Like you suggested, I brought the two toms on the kick a bit closer and planed them a little flatter. I can't quite figure out how to get the 8" tom much closer to the rack toms ... maybe turn the...

Re: Gretsch Catalina Maple - I thought they were better

Dennis, you do have a great point. I agree it's better to play into the room, but I'm facing an outer wall to mitigate the effect on my neighbors. Essentially, part of the problem could be that the...

Re: snare ring

I've got to say, I love the wallet thing. I just sat down in front of my new 7-piece Gretsch Catalina Maple kit ... the first real chance I've had to play it ... and I was a little disappointed about...

Re: Gretsch Catalina Maple - I thought they were better

Haha. I do appreciate the advice. I had Remo pinstripes on the toms of my 5-piece with ambassadors as the reso heads and it was a drastic, wonderful improvement. I'm not debating the truth that there...

Re: Gretsch Catalina Maple - I thought they were better

Well, here's the new kit, somewhat set up. I know the logo on the head of that 8" tom is going to annoy me, so I'll probably take it down and adjust it. Yes, I like an extreme tilt to my rack toms......

Re: Gretsch Catalina Maple - I thought they were better

Hey, fellas. I've been wondering ... how out-of-round is out-of-round? Basically, am I being unrealistic to expect every element of my kit to be air-tight flush with a flat surface?

I just...

Re: Gretsch Catalina Maple - I thought they were better

Haha. Amen to that. That's why I just try to vet as many sources as possible, eventually the closest thing to truth makes itself apparent.

Re: Gretsch Catalina Maple - I thought they were better

In your case, your experience certainly speaks volumes about the veracity of how you assess the quality of drum heads. I felt I qualified my statements enough to allow such wriggle room for the...

Re: Gretsch Catalina Maple - I thought they were better

If I were more worried about this refuting the scores upon scores of stellar reviews from owners of the Gretsch Cats, I might seriously regret having just purchased one! Of course, they could just be...

Re: snare ring

I love that bit about the wallet. Very ingenious.

I just realized something mildly similar today with my notebook on top of my 16" floor tom. Just for the hell of it, I hit the thing, and ......

Re: Your thoughts on Ludwig Classic Birch series

I know this is an old thread, but I'd like to resurrect it. I've been looking at a Ludwig Classic Birch set and I was hoping for some input.

As I mentioned in one of my (few) other posts, I'm a...

Re: eBay Sabian AAX 14" Stage Hats Misery

Thanks guys. It's great to have the benefit of other people's wisdom and experience.

One thing about which I'm curious, is it a generally shared sentiment that Sabian hats aren't necessarily worth...

Re: Other drummer's bad/nasty/uncomfortable drum sets!

Couldn't you just turn the whole snare stand around?

I don't really mind playing on other kits, but our own kits are definitely optimal for our playing.

eBay Sabian AAX 14" Stage Hats Misery

I just got totally schooled on eBay. Waited too long to pounce on a set of AAX 14" Stage Hats, which were listed as "new" and were going for $197. Whoever won got them for that price because my dumb...

Re: Tuning help please

Hi, anyone and everyone. I'm a total neophyte (sorry, but I hate the term "newbie") on these boards. I played drums from 5 until I was about 12, when I got tired of being assigned the ride cymbal or...
