Re: Anatomy of Drumming

I think John is onto something and look forward to getting his book. A while back there was a thread debating pinky on or off the stick (matched or on the lead hand traditional). I posted a top...

Re: Keeping Time doing a (buzz) roll as a fill

As Bill says, play a check pattern to keep the strokes consistent.

Here's another take on them to consider. We use buzz rolls all the time in pipe band drumming, so while this may not directly...

Chimpanzee drum solo, released

For some reason, this has been in the vaults for over ten years. Now it's been released for your listening pleasure:

Re: Self Indulgent Ego Massage....

You're probably a lot better than you think you are. And there's something that you must add to the chemistry of his playing that he likes. Something that a younger and supposedly 'better' player...

Re: Minor Jazz Treasures, Great Memories

My pleasure, geezer! It's a little indulgent (and maybe fan-boyish) but I wish more people could have seen these greats before they passed. Not just Elvin & Art, but so many others who created a...

Minor Jazz Treasures, Great Memories

Recently, I found some items that I thought were lost. One was damaged, the other three basically intact. I mentioned the first album some time back on this forum, when I first saw Elvin Jones at...

Re: 3D Printer Drumset? Cool! But, How Does It Sound?

NextEngine has a 3D scanner which can be used to scan obsolete parts. This 8 minute video hosted by Jay Leno is a good introduction:

A good scanner...

Re: Elvin Jones: The Subtleties of Timekeeping

I love the full interview. It's always uplifting to read Elvin's wisdom and insight.

Re: Art Blakey

Well, he certainly wasn't shy and would hit it out of the park regularly. But he could also play as quiet "as a rat pissin' on cotton", especially for contrast. He built the music up from the bottom...

Re: Traditional grip- how do I control the double?

Exactly. Plus, there are many variations of both grip and stick motion within traditional. It's hard enough if everyone played trad grip exactly the same way but had different ways of explaining...

Re: Help! Can't keep time without a metronome

True- he's just scratching the surface with possibilities. But the OP appears to have a fundamental problem with timing and in this case, there's plenty on this video to help out. And someone with...

Re: Help! Can't keep time without a metronome

Here is my recent go to response for people who have problems with a steady pulse. Even players who don't seem to have a problem with timing should get something out of it:

Re: Annoying store experience.

That really is a shame. The store I go to regularly is on the North Shore of Boston (Beverly, MA) and the owner is not only patient and knowledgeable, he'll match any online price. And if he's not...

ronyd: I hope you don't mind my piggybacking on your thread. A few week back, our local store (the Drum Shop North Shore) invited me to go on a tour of the factory. It was like going to Willy...

I just happened to look back at this thread and you seem to be mixing up Mark David Chapman with John Hinkley.

This is alluding to a comment I made about Mark David Chapman, that "his name evokes...

Re: How to naturally play quieter?

Try to draw sound out of the drum rather than bang into it. Cut your volume in half. And then half again. You can play quiet and still be powerful. Think finesse.

Then check your band-mates'...

Monster player and nice, down to earth guy. He lives around Boston now and stops in every so often to our local drum store on the North Shore. I've only seen him play solos, but the fact that BS&Ts...

Another take on Seven

Bill Ray's thread on 7 against 4 got me to thinking about this. And rather than throwing out any definitions, I thought it better to just play it. (Though I hope a better drummer than me can post a...

Re: Alan Dawson: How Do You Sound? vs How Do You Look?

I just saw 4 videos of Chaney and again, while he certainly has technique and stamina to get through his theatrics while playing, I don't see or hear anything that novel. Yes, the fact that he may...
