How do you approach it? Not necessarily just jazz but any kind of music where there are opportunities to interact with what other musicians are playing. I've never once heard this explained in a way...

Most finger techniques that I'm familiar with won't do much for volume. Finger techniques just don't generate the same power that arms and wrists do.

Also the drum set has so many different types...
