Re: Sloppy fills

Nail on head. Someone else said that all fills need to be practiced, and for most of us that is true, but quite often Moon was reaching for something he had never done before and had just popped into...

Re: Sloppy fills

Plus 1 on that. I have never gone to a gig to see a specific musician, I go to watch a performance. A band stands or falls as a whole.

I am not sloppy, I merely add colour, swing and feel to the...

Re: No more jam sessions for me. I'm done

This might sound stupid but, are you "realy" listening to the rest of the band? I find, during a real improvised number that If I keep the very basic time whilst listening to where the other...

Re: The worst gig of my life

The only reason the guitar example fails, is, once again, and someone on here completely fails to get this into there head, TIME!!!!! A guitarist can walk on stage plug in and is ready to go, 10...

Re: The worst gig of my life

Errr, you didnt say it was crap gear you said it was a setup not to your liking and was not adjustable. Not the same thing.

I say again, If there is not time for all the drummers on the bill to...

Re: Wish me luck - could this be my next band?

Sounds like a fabulous gig to me, sitting behind a full band, with good vocalists, playing that evocative stuff.......I envy you. Chin Chin, my dear

Re: Drum suspension systems

To my ears they add nothing to the sound, and most of them are fugly. Look at the black bits of bent angle iron Tama call suspension mounts.

I bought a Yamaha Stage Custom, as a back up to my old...

Re: Drum suspension systems

Says who? The only reason they would have used them would be because, like now, thats what most new kits come supplied with. The public wants what the public gets.

Companies come up with a...

Re: The worst gig of my life

You still dont get it though. If there are more bands on the bill than time to let all the drummers set up and tear down there own kits then thats it. Its not being done just to annoy you,...

Re: The worst gig of my life

Thats all well and good, but time constraints are usualy not there for fun. Also, If you say no to the setup you can bet you wont get another call from the organisers, someone else will. Its an...

Re: The worst gig of my life

No one likes playing backline kits, we all want to be comfotable, but thats not the point. The point is sometime you have to play a backline kit and you have to make the best of it.

Its not the...

Re: The worst gig of my life

If its a kit share.....Its a kit share, end of story, you have to make the best of it. I have not played my own kit for three months, nothing but rehearsal studios with supplied kits, I am getting...

Re: Is hard to make a living out of jazz? Are there any jobs out there?

Im afraid that makes no sense, If you make a living at something you are making money out of it.

I love playing the drums and have done it for 45 years, but I also have to work full time to make a...

Re: College kid getting into drums - first steps?

I am still un decided as to wether the internet is always a good thing. I dont know what prompted the OP to want to play drums (probably the internet) but sometimes you can have too much information,...

But I didnt say the sound of my instrument was irrelevant, I said I dont feel suspension systems or un-drilled BDs make a noticeable difference to the sound of drums, and I love the sound of...

Re: Is hard to make a living out of jazz? Are there any jobs out there?

You should probably get into music for the right reason......because you love playing it, not cos you think you can make a living from it.

A very wise person once said "If you get into music to...

Re: WERE DO I START??? *JAZZ DRUMMING*

If you are short of the old cash, worry not, you can do so much by listening and working out parts for yourself. A teacher can help with problems and motivation but in the end you still do 99% of the...

Re: Drum suspension systems

My toms and BD sing just fine with the standard mounts, I sometimes have to take the edge off them in "Hard" venues or rooms. I sometimes think this whole un drilled BD thing is another marketing...

Re: WERE DO I START??? *JAZZ DRUMMING*

As has been said already, the ears are the first tool in learning a new genre. Listen to Jazz and work out what the drummer is doing. Dontjust learn it because you think it sounds difficult, do it...

Re: Just starting at 53 and will need all the help I can get!

If you want the Yamaha and it wont break the bank then go for it. They make quality kits at all price points.

Please, dont spend years in the bedroom practicing, get playing with others as soon...

Re: Just starting at 53 and will need all the help I can get!

Get a kit ASAP. Playing with others is where its at. Unless you have that sort of personality learning all the technique and rudiments first is a difficult and, to me anyway, tedious task. If you can...

Re: Humbling Experience

The Kit? As long as the sizes are to my liking, I am a little guy so I like a 20" bass drum and shallow toms, I dont realy care what it is. Now cymbals are another thing entirely.

Re: Blurred lines ripped off the "feel"

[/B]

Couldnt agree more. My point was I would go and watch almost any group of musicians making music, I would not go and watch a DJ or a guy with a sampler. If I want to listen to recorded music...
