Re: US/Canadian exchange rates INSANE

The dollar is surging right now vs. other currencies, apparently-- a euro costs $1.125, which is the lowest it's been in a long time. Which kind of sucks, because I've got a tour coming up in April,...

Re: Is "pocket" what you play or how you play it?

It just has to do with the quality of your time, and the way you place your notes-- some quality beyond just playing accurate time. I'm sure someone has made up a scholarly definition for it, but I...

Re: Tony Williams Hi hat on "Fred"

Nice, the first Tony record I ever bought, in like 1983. I should learn this tune, too. Keep working on the real part, playing the whole thing with your hand. It's a challenge the first time you get...

Re: Question about hand technique on the texas shuffle

May be-- nobody's calling me for blues gigs, so I'm not really an expert on making those people happy. Usually in the past when I didn't know a style the way someone wanted, they would tell me how...

Re: Question about hand technique on the texas shuffle

Hmm, not sure I totally understand your question. You have a lot of freedom in how you play it. All anyone wants to hear is the shuffle rhythm, a strong backbeat, and a strong quarter note pulse. You...

Re: The natural meter challenge!

Well, that's where I blew it-- I was singing Duck Walk, by Booker T and the MGs, but I was hearing it 10 bpm too slow... I was playing 96 and the track is actually at 106.

Re: The natural meter challenge!

OK, here's the video (http://youtu.be/681dyK8-R44)-- I started at 96.0 and ended at 95.1. It is a challenge to keep your focus-- I'll have to try that again at some different tempos and feels-- a...

Re: Playing for the song, but still leaving a bit of "yourself" on the track.

It's hard for me to get my head around this question-- playing "like somebody else" requires musical knowledge, and you own your musical knowledge, by definition.

It's a given that you...

Re: Meytal Cohen? She plays, right?

This is ridiculous. If you think the differences between men's and women's bodies have any bearing on ability to play the drums, you don't know anything about playing the drums.

Re: When have you truly 'mastered' a given BPM?

I promise you, if you can do something perfectly for ten minutes, you have, if nothing else, the technique mastered.

Re: Snare Reso Tuning Problems!!!

Obviously you're tensioning it way too tight. The head should flex a little bit under your finger. It should not feel rock hard. Get all of the lugs as tight as you can with your fingers, then...

Re: How to build up weaker hand?

Great advice from Ed and others, there. I just worked a whole lot out of Stick Control, doing the left hand lead exercises about twice as much as the RH lead ones.

Re: First studio drum experience - Advice?

You always feel like you suck when tracking. I do, anyway. I would try to not focus on the micro-timing of the different limbs-- the time to work on that is when you're practicing-- I don't think it...

Re: M. Goldenberg's Soldier's March question...

That's pretty excessive, but the only part that seems totally unreasonable at first glance is the accented 32nd notes in the second and fourth lines from the end-- I'd have to do an accented RRLL...

Re: How can i understand Elvin Jones?

No membership, so I guess I'm SOL-- I wish they'd at least give you a little preview of that. Elvin Jones is a complex artist, and you can't really summarize him in a forum comment. The way you go...

Re: Worst song ever

Somehow the band shortening it's name to just "Starship" with that release just heightens the suck.

Also bumping "Sweet Caroline" to the top of the thread, here. That one never gets any easier.

Re: Wfd starts next thursday july 17

Holy cow. We're getting into pro wrestling-level melodrama here, which seems totally appropriate. If this thing is half the snake oil show I think it is, we'll soon be seeing screaming, on-mic...
