Re: Best snares on the market

Overall wood: Guru thin shelled stave
Overall metal: Joyful Noise TKO brass
Overall hybrid: DW/Sabian Vault Edge

There is absolutely no way to avoid subjectivity in a thread like this. I own...

Re: New Tama StarClassic Bubinga setup

I could have been mistaken but I thought the newer tom mounts were introduced just a year or two after your kit's manufacture. Perhaps one of the Tama experts on DW can chime in.

Re: New Tama StarClassic Bubinga setup

That Starcast tom mount isn't from 2008. Looks like the new version. Fantastic kit. I'm sold on Tama bubinga drums

Re: That Erskine kit at NAMM

They sound out of this world. Deep and rich. Gorgeous sounding drums as good as you can get in ply production drums IMO.

Re: I'm back. Did you miss me?

I believe Vinny may be ahead by a neck.

Re: NAMM 2015 - what do you expect to see?

For max resonance use one of those EC2 snare batter heads with the center patch on that Premier. A brick will resonate more. Makes the Reference 20 ply look like a thin shell design.

Re: New Tama Gear

The zebra wood Star snare has been out for some time and originally released exclusively for the European market. Sounds like it may now be available worldwide.

Re: Crack Attack!

Like you, I felt my Reference 20-ply was too dead. As a result I parted ways with mine, even though the shimmer of oz finish was breathtaking. Perhaps I should have had more patience and continued to...

Re: A Badge Stix Would be Proud Of

Some fella who was somewhat fond of Mapex drums. :) He's been on his best behavior on another forum. Let's invite him back. He's served his sentence.

Re: DW aquires Gretsch and Latin Percussion...

Haven't laughed like that in a while! Hey, did John Good get the rights to the silver sealer formula? It's makeup is more secret than McDonald's special sauce and the Zildjian family alloy formula....

Re: Sold my stage customs, looking for mid range maple kit

Spend a couple hundred more than the kits you cited and you'll be in the Sessions/Starclassic birch/bubinga ballpark. Far better drums for just a bit more money. Well worth it.

Re: DW Collector's 6.5 x14 Galaxy Black

My 10+6 6x14 maple snare is a terrific drum. It came as part of a complete DW Collector's kit I bought so ordinarily I wouldn't have sought the drum out on its own. That would have been a mistake...

Have a blast guys. NAMM is on my bucket list. Just have to figure out how to arrange a pass.

Re: joyful noise owners?

Just to address my experience with tuning these Joyful Noise drums, some drums are very forgiving when one or two tension rods are tighter, or looser than the others. Many drums will still sound good...

Re: joyful noise owners?

I've noticed the especially deep snare beds as well, at least on my metal drums, because the reso head will slightly wrinkle near them unless you crank it WAY high as Mike stated. I never found this...

Re: joyful noise owners?

Oh, and that blistered maple grain is breathtaking. If I had only known about those before I picked up my standard, reclaimed maple. One more suggestion: ask Drumcenter to let you play around with...

Re: joyful noise owners?

I own a TKO, soared copper and maple. The TKO is extraordinary; if you like brass this as good as it gets. First rate craftsmanship and Curt Waltrip is a class act. My copper is a bit finicky but...

Re: Am I a freak for not liking virgin bass drums?

Of course you have to chase the virgin kicks more often. They're saving themselves for the right tom.

Re: looking for new metal snare.

Congrats on the new snare. She's a beauty but that head will suck the tone from a good drum. Of course you could hit the drum with a sledgehammer and that head will take it and keep ticking.

Re: DW VLT and X series - has anyone any experience?

My former kit had a 22x20 VLX kick. It had plenty of low end presence, but so does my current 24x14 with just the standard "Built in Bottom," essentially an inner vertical ply. The SSC technology...
