Re: Beat Timing Question

I have the book "Rhythm of the Red Man", and many of the pieces have metric divisions that switch between 3/8,7/8,5/8, 9/8,4/4 etc. These pieces are well choreographed and are meant to accompany...

Re: Beat Timing Question

Yeah, when I listen to a bunch of drums in sync it is hard to hear where the beat is. My ear tends to key in are the first stroke as the loudest even if it isn't the loudest or the most consistent,...

Re: Beat Timing Question

Thanks for the suggestion. I think that is the beginning. Now, throwing a couple more notes or players(like eight), how do you arrange the rhythmic intervals... To what effect.

Re: Beat Timing Question

I looked up some J Dilla. I liked it, but the laid back chilled out boom bap isn't what I am talking about.

I've been listening to these Black Lodge Singers.

Re: Beat Timing Question

I can figure it out, but life is journey and it helps to have a road map and friends.

One of things I was wondering was with the pow wow drumming. I've encountered the term hard beats and soft...

Re: Beat Timing Question

Maybe I can explain it with finger drumming. If you take four fingers index through pinky(no thumb), then drum them on the table you can get a number of different feels depending on how loud each...

Beat Timing Question

Are there any materials out there that discuss beat timing in depth. I've seen threads on ahead of or behind the beat, but I've been thinking about this a lot recently what if you have more than a...

Re: Mastering the Tables of Time

Oops I thought I reinvented this idea.

https://youtu.be/IjUiPE8EPWY

Tables of Time are awesome. There are lots of traditional rhythms that work well with them.

Re: A Non-Anonymous Section..?

Many people have day jobs, and wouldn't otherwise be able to express many viewpoints, without privacy.

Re: Should I Quit Band Due to Constant Critiques By Singer?

On second thought she's probably just needs to take more breaks, and is covering for it (less talk more singing).

Re: Should I Quit Band Due to Constant Critiques By Singer?

Sounds like she is stuck on her previous brush with the spot light. Likely her previous greatness wasn't even due to her skills, but to her backing band making her sound good(why isn't she with them...

Re: Why the same songs, when so many to choose from?

Word on the street is that some bands don't get called back if they use the same set list at the same venue more than once. At this point it's just a rumor I heard once about what a restaurant owner...

Re: Check my logic and correct me if necessary.

I've been playing sevens as polyrhythms, I usually think of them in relation to the meter I'm playing over, if it's a two four then 7/8 if it's a four four then 7/4. If that makes any sense.

Re: Music that Improves your senses.

Are these pow wow drums actually in unison, or just extremely close to it?

Re: Music that Improves your senses.

It probably does have something to do with the way one listens(or participates), but having the right material with which to listen would help. I think anything that splits hairs, would do :)

Re: Music that Improves your senses.

I once read that the Native Americans were more into continuity, and that many of there songs had slowly descending melodies. Makes me wonder if there isn't some relationship between the slowly...

Music that Improves your senses.

This is sort of an aesthetics question. I've been doing photography, something that I do is calibrate my lenses. I use a big black and white chart. The chart has all of these edges....

Re: Flaming Drum Sticks

When I was a kid at camp fires, we used to eat marsh mellows and when the sticks caught on fire we would wave them around in the air a little. Under close adult supervision, in a region that wasn't...

Re: What is the boogaloo beat?

There is a local community college that specializes in music and arts. I go to their faculty jazz series. They often give a mini lecture before they play the songs. I roughly recall that before...

Re: Theory: Nobody wants anything new

I think innovation is more of a business idea. You could produce exactly the same product, but cheaper and that would be considered "innovative".

Re: Current drumming sucks

Winter is when I do most of my drumming. Now is the time to be outside, and to play more portable instruments, trumpet, flute, marimbula, xylophone, log drum, etc. I also distane A/C so even if I...

Re: Listening to Jazz-Not as simple as it seems.

Cranial jazz is cranial jazz.

I think there was and possibly still a trend towards passive listening. Around the sixties you had the combination of white blight in the cities paired with longer...

Re: guitars too loud, why?!!

I prefer to serve the dance.

OK, you noticed that I'm not much into guitar, thus all guitar sounds pretty much the same.

Now suppose I was actually interested in hearing guitar.... Why compress...

Re: guitars too loud, why?!!

I detect a hint of sarcasm, but seriously. If you aren't that into the songs, then you take the guitar and put it into the mix, play some messy chords with feedback... As the night wears on... The...
