Two things are usually at play: coordination and control.

Coordination is mostly just practicing the groove to get muscle memory.

Control is working your twitch muscles to be able to play at...

He was also muting with the tip of his stick and not the butt ;)

Pretty neat. Never seen that done before outside of timbale playing.

Interesting. I have seen the pitching bending with your thumb thing but never with the stick after a hit.

This Jeff Hamilton clip shows him doing something similar.

The swing scale is from eighth notes to dotted 16ths with triplets at the midpoint. It is up to you as the musician to decide where on the swing scale you want to be.

This happens to everyone starting out.

The cure is to practice with a metronome at very slow tempos and build up speed slowly.

This ingrains a sense of time to your playing and helps you...
