Re: Singers and percussion

It is not as easy as it seems. You have to learn to free up braincells to do the shaking.

We have the problem the other way around in my batucada where at some point everyone is supposed to shout...

Re: What's your process for coming up with drum grooves for songs?

Before thinking about the exact details of the groove, maybe you want to take a step back and imagine if the song asks for some kind of contrast or development.

Take the example of Learning to...

Re: Personality Influences Playing

Now how extravert are certain famous drummers?
Neil Peart
Dave Garibaldi
Simon Phillips

You don't HAVE to be Chad or Keith to play a brilliant solo.
Be yourself and go back to the kit! ;)

Re: How to feel the tempo after 2 bar count off ?

I'm familiar with the issue of taking the tempo that the leader comes up with and which can be slower or faster than usual. As soon as he starts counting off, take over the tempo immediately for...

Re: All-Consuming Hate Kills the Artistís Creativity

I think hate and musicianship are mutually exclusive. Unless music is elitist and used to separate people, not unite.
Look how peaceful this forum is, you should see certain competitive sports...

Re: Here's an idea!

The confusion and conflicting answers things is unfortunately a reflection of reality and simply the first stage of a learning process that eventually leads to wisdom nirvana. I don't think we should...

Re: On teaching

Positive motivating is good for beginners. If you're looking for excellence, nothing works better than the occasional kick in the butt. Occasional, not permanent :)
I have two kids. One badly lacks...

Re: Does independence just click one day?

It wouldn't be as much fun if anyone could master it in 10 minutes! I remember the bossa nova moment very well. The hardest thing is to start it and play the first measure with everything at the...

Re: Help with trying to soundproof shop building

If you have an existing decent structure, decent I mean stone walls, the soundproofing should not cost more than the kit in my experience if you DIY.

Just to stir up the discussion: this whole...

Re: Chad Smith

"Fit well in the context" is not doing him justice imho. If you take him out of the RHCP the whole thing collapses. I think he's awesome and inspiring.

Re: How can I improve the feel and technique of my weak hand

1. Get a teacher
2. Slower alternative: try to find out exactly what the weak hand is doing differently than the strong hand. You said the fingers leave the stick. How does that happen. Film your...

Re: First studio drum experience - Advice?

Is this the first time you recorded your drumming? If yes then it's normal to be confronted with imperfections that you don't hear while you're playing. Record yourself more often and it will for...

Re: Practicing on an electric kit....

100% agree.

I traded in my e-kit when I got my a-kit and regret it now. It gives you much more practice time. If you can afford to have both, it's perfect.

I used to have a TD4KX (all mesh)...

Re: Acoustic Foam

The idea is to build a room inside the room. Double wall, double ceiling, double door, ideally a double floor with shock absorbing material between them. If your room is frigging small, it will be...

Re: Carmine Appice Lobbies For Led Zeppelin Drum Spot

Notwithstanding his abilities, I just can't see how he can be so utterly uninterested as to not rehearse the song and just think he can wing it while it does not even remotely look like the original...

Re: Carmine Appice Lobbies For Led Zeppelin Drum Spot

Jeez he doesn't even have a clue of the signature beat of the chorus. Totally unprepared.

Mastery in the end is up to yourself. It's your drumming, not anyone else's. How satisfied are you when you listen back to the recording?
Be complacent and you'll race through the exercise book and...

Re: Taking kick pedals on a plane

I'm sure Al Q et al don't need us for clever ideas on how to satisfy the voices in their heads.

I was told by one airline taking a cymbal as hand luggage is ok. I would guess a pedal or parts of...

Re: Do Youtube Drum Covers Influence What/How You Play?

I see what you mean, but life's too short to contamplate your own shortcomings... Look at the bright side. Youtube allows you to steal those nuances and become a better drummer :)

Yep! Replace Genesis by RHCP - Blood Sugar Sex Magik and there's my list.

I could add
Sting - Ten Summoner's Tales
Deep Purple - Live In Japan
