Re: Yamaha Tour Custom

After calling off work, blowing off my wife and kids, and pondering your post for quite some time, I believe what you have is absolutely an Absolute Custom Birch Custom Absolute...absolutely.

Re: Keeping Things Light

Bones, I had a Saturn 3, which had the tom base plate mounted on rods that went from the back lugs to the front lugs. The plate was not drilled to the shell. Don't know how familiar you are with...

Re: Keeping Things Light

This has been a great read; lots of great tips/info being shared about a frequently discussed subject. When I was younger I never thought about the weight of my gear, but at 45 I've been looking to...

Re: Ok, how many of you have "unsuspended" your floor toms?

I have an older Yamaha Stage Custom with 1 piece lugs that had a suspended 12x14 floor tom. Left it as is for a while, but drilled and mounted floor tom brackets a few months back. Easy job and I...

Re: No Talent Hack, But Loving It....

Well said Mr. Bones. I would encourage the OP to invest in some headphones/ isolation type in ear monitors, and play along to music he likes. It will help improve his time/meter, and give him some...

Re: How long have you been in your working band?

4 1/2 years in my current band. Funny thing is, I've known 2 of the guys for over 20 years, known 1 guy for 16 years, and never met the bass player (Donny) until I joined the band. However Donny...

Re: Does anyone actually do gigs with large bass drums any more?

Drummers have figured out a few things over the years. One being that small kick drums can do more than just make a bebop sound, and that microphones are the great equalizer. The light...

Re: Mid range kits

I will report back on this thread after I've swapped out the reso. I can't predict how the drum will sound with the head combo you asked about. The drum seems to be naturally on the dry side so I...

Re: Mid range kits

Fritz, since you're interested in possibly buying a Stage Custom, I thought I would report back after my first gig with my SC and share my thoughts.

My band usually brings bass bins to this...

Re: Mid range kits

I believe the Stage Custom will do just fine for you. I picked up a used SC about a month ago, and wasn't quite sure if I liked it initially. I made a comment in another thread about the SC...

Re: The new acquisition - walnut thermagloss!

Mr Eder, congrats on your latest acquisition. Love the walnut finish. I've told you before on here that I've seen a few of your videos, and I enjoy your playing. Obviously very seasoned, with a...

Re: Pros who play low-ish end or midrange kits?

Tama artist Alan Evans was using a Silverstar kit a few years back. I thought it was a marketing ploy, but there are multiple pictures and videos where he's using a Silverstar in a live setting.

Sorry to hear about your condition; had no idea you were having some issues. Heck, I was just watching you play yesterday; I'm interested in acquiring a Sonor Bop kit, was watching some videos on...

Re: Mid range kits

I recently bought a barely used SC birch. The drums are solid and well made. Lugs are nice, die cast bass drum claws with rubber lining. Excellent tom holder. The drums sound good (talking about...

Re: Is Yamaha Stage Custom an upgrade over Sonor Safari?

Your kit sounds great in that clip. I've heard plenty of small bass drums mic'd at larger venues, so I know how punchy they can sound. Yours had a thickness to the tone; care to share your head...

Re: The one piece of gear you'll take to the grave

My Zildjian Sweet ride. There are many like it but this one is mine! My wife bought it for me years ago, and all bias aside I have never heard one I like better than this one. Good stick...

Re: What you hear behind the kit

At a large local club I used to play frequently (sadly out of business) the sound man used 1 overhead and a bass drum mic to reinforce the kit. The drums always sounded great there; mine, and every...

Re: What you hear behind the kit

Simon Phillips discusses throne tone in one of his videos. He makes a comment about how whether it's a violin or a drum, it's not going to sound right to the player. You need to be 10, 15 feet away...

Re: Phillipine Mahogany drums/my set/stuff i've heard

I have an older Yamaha Stage Custom with the 1 piece lugs. Overall, wasn't overly impressed with them. However, I was inspired to work on them a bit after seeing multiple YouTube videos where these...

Re: Yamaha AMH 22x18 to 20x16

I understand your dilemma. I have found in the last year that I prefer smaller drums. I recently bought a nice 12-14-20 Tama Silverstar, and my plan was the same as yours; use my big Saturns for...

Re: My Ludwig Watts Project

You know, it's really irritating how you always seem to find great deals on beautiful older kits lol. That kit, that finish, those sizes... man, I'd love to stumble upon a kit like that. Really,...
